Purple Pretty in the Motor City!
For anyone living or working in the Detroit area, this time of year means one thing; the North American International Auto Show. This annual display of the latest and greatest cars and trucks brings throngs of people to downtown Detroit to kick tires and compare products from all over the world. It’s huge! It’s important! And I try to stay as far away from it as possible! I went one time several years ago and was put off by the whole experience. We had to pay $20 to park several blocks away, slog through snow and slush and cold only to fight long lines and crazy crowds. We couldn’t get close enough to tell if I was looking at a Buick or a BMW! My husband would collect brochures from all the various brands and lug them home and a week or two later they’d make it into our recycle bin! I really couldn’t see the point in it all. I mean if I’m going to wait in line that long there had better be a beach or a heck of a sale price on some designer shoes at the other end!
As a reminder, this week I’m featuring outfits based around some functional yet fashionable outerwear. This time of year the beaches on Lake Michigan are more suitable for cross country skiing than volleyball. People asked for some hot and warm winter looks and my job is to give the people what they want! Today I started with a bright pretty purple wool coat. I love this coat’s not too long cut and its military feel with plenty of blingy buttons. Purple is the traditional color of royalty and can be very rich and strong. And that’s a winning combination not only in a coat but with coffee and for sure in a husband or boyfriend!
When highlighting a statement piece with such a bold color you don’t want to overdo it with the rest of your outfit. So I used a mixture of different shades of grey to tone down the purple a bit. I only went with a few instead of the 50 some of you were hoping for! The light grey sweater is a fun piece with a colorful robot character front and center. This mechanical marvel gave me some other accent colors to draw from to get to my recommended total of 3. Here I chose the bright blue to segue into my neon blue quilted bag. This busy little robot also had some purple to tie into the coat so really did her best to make everyone happy. I wanted to add a bit of nature to my look so under the manmade machine is a soft floral button down shirt. This added an interesting contrast in theme while keeping right in step with the color palette. I went back to black with my floppy wool hat on one end and knee high suede boots on the other to make sure that neither function nor fashion had to take a backseat!
