How to tone down a short dress

You’re not from around here!

When I moved to America from China I was in for some major culture shock. It started at the airport. I couldn’t speak much English and had a hard time understanding the Immigration Officer. Luckily I was with my future husband and he waited in the long line of foreign visitors with me to help me though. After finally getting our luggage, I went out to meet for the first time, my future brother-in-law. He was picking us up at the airport and the first stop would be his house, where my fiancé’s car was waiting along with a whole bunch of his relatives! I remember looking out the window during the hour long drive and wondering what I had just gotten myself into! I couldn’t read any of the road signs or billboards! What was I thinking?

We eventually got to this huge house though and I began to get excited! Maybe this was like all the houses in America, and it wouldn’t be so bad after all. I had seen pictures of what would be my first house in America and knew it was older than my future in-law’s, but it’s hard to get an idea of the size of things from pictures. A lot of my fiancé’s nieces, nephews and their kids were there to meet the new person from China. They were super nice and tried to talk to me, ask questions and make me feel at home. Unfortunately, I only got maybe 1 out of every 10 words and had to constantly ask them to repeat their question slower. We had a pretty long day by then. If any of you have ever had a 15 hour flight and crossed 12 time zones, you know how tiring that can be. Anyway after a little while, my husband and I got into our smaller, older car and headed to my future home. This didn’t quite turn out to be my dream house come true! If you want to read more details, please log back in tomorrow and you’ll find out why!

This outfit is mostly from Kohl’s. I have another story about my local Kohl’s but am saving it for later this week! That is what we in the media call a “teaser”! The dress is by Jennifer Lopez. I really liked it but it was a bit on the tight and short side for daily wear. So I decided to coordinate on a more conservative note to tone down the vibe to a more office appropriate feel. My first move was to put on my trusty and super useful denim button down shirt. Wearing this under the dress gave instant style points and a casual mood that continued into the black tights. By not showing a lot of skin on my legs, I kept this short dress right on the good taste target. Good taste never has to be boring though so I spiced things up a little with my leopard print booties. You knew the color would have to come somewhere and my pink fringed leather purse and white fedora are more than up to the task. I wore that hat whenever I travel so it reminds me of going on some adventure or another. The final touch was to bling up my wrists. That’s where my arm charm strength bracelet was more than up for the job of adding a flowing and playful vibe.
