Spring break Cancun tips—what to pack for a one week beach all inclusive vacation

What should your suitcase look like for traveling to Cancun in April?

My husband and I have done quite a bit of travelling and are getting pretty good for not only packing, but packing light. One thing you learn is how much you can pack and not use. So after a few times repacking clean clothes to take home at the end of the trip, I have cut down a lot. For example on our just finished spring break 7 night trip, we only took one full size suitcase and one carryon bag for 2 people. We had a couple personal bags of course. I carried my neon yellow travel purse and my husband had his Coach leather shoulder bag that we’ve converted to carry our cameras and lenses. We have been very fortunate in our travels so far because we have never lost our suitcase, YET! We’ve had some come through in pretty bad shape but they always show up eventually. Anyway, it’s only a matter of time before it’s our turn to have our luggage go on a separate vacation from us, so we always try to prepare for the worst situation.

In our carryon bag I will pack at least one day of everything essential. This includes a change of underclothes! You can survive a lot if you have some clean clothes next to your important parts! I have a couple rules for our packing that have come from our experiences. One is, if there is anything that is worth more than $100 then it should be either in the carryon or in my personal purse. The same applies to whatever I think is not replaceable at that moment. This usually applies to small electronics such as cameras, iPads and shavers or similar. Unfortunately I have to check through a lot of makeup that meets the minimum dollar requirement but is too big to meet the small liquid size that’s allowed to come onboard with you. I always worry about losing my makeup bag more than most things but so far, so good!

So how to pack for clothes? I’m glad you asked! For our week (March 20-27) in Cancun it was almost 85° every day so I didn’t have any chance to use my long sleeve T-shirt or sweaters. But I’m not complaining! That’s exactly the weather we were trying to find after our Michigan February. I’m pretty sure that month had about 53 days in it! And every one was COLD! We did our homework and research on the weather. We checked the forecast and looked into the averages for this time of year. So we had a pretty good idea of what to expect. And it seems like the weather forecasters for Cancun were a lot more accurate that the ones who cover the Detroit area! Or maybe when it’s a boring 85 and sunny almost every day it’s easier to predict the weather.

Here is the list of what I packed:

1. 3 two piece bikinis and one 1 piece swimsuit
2. 4 beach covers
3. One pair of flip flops, please consider that they love marble in Cancun, and everything is slippery as a result. I would bring flip flops that have good traction for around the pool.
4. Two pairs of sandals for dinner and one pair of flats for excursions. (Note that shoes usually can take up most of the space in my suitcase so I try to find the most comfy ones and also make sure they are easy to coordinate with most of the outfits)
5. 7 dresses for dinner; 1 for each day
6. Two shorts
7. Two tops
8. 3 pairs of sunglasses
9. Two hats
10. 4 evening bags and one cross body bag for day trips
11. One long necklace & two mid length necklaces
12. 6 bracelets
13. Two pair of earrings
15. A few assorted hair accessories
16. Mosquito spray! In fact we brought some convenient wipes that would put the repellent where you wanted it. Luckily we didn’t need it. Where we stayed was not bad, but we heard a lot of complaints from some others.
17. At least 3 bottles of waterproof sunscreen for two adults for a week. Note that with both the insect spray and sunscreen it’s better to bring a bit more than you may think you need. The all-inclusive resorts make a LOT of money on these particular items if you come up short!
18. Two cameras. One for blogworthy photos and one for candid or underwater use.
19. Two watches. One dress and one for underwater. After all even if you’re at the beach you don’t want to miss the next buffet!

I like to be organized so I put things together and in a bag. It helps keep them so they are not going to roll around in your suitcase. I usually roll all the clothes together as well and this trick really saved a lot of space. But make sure you have a small scale to weigh your suitcase. On most airlines in the coach section where we sit the limit is 50 pounds.

We love our Samsonite suitcase! It’s hard sided to protect our belongings but is still pretty light weight. One great feature it has is 4 wheels that let the bag spin 360° or you can drag it behind you on two wheels like a traditional suitcase. You will really appreciate this versatility when you are rolling it over different surfaces.

Spring break Cancun tips—what to wear at the airport

Spring break Cancun tips—what to wear at the airport

If you’ve been paying attention, GOOD JOB! You will know that my husband and I were on vacation last week. We went to sunny Cancun, Mexico. But don’t worry; I was still working hard to bring you the best blog possible! If you checked back to read my ongoing story about learning to drive, that will be back in a few days, but the next several posts will cover spring break. Mine and hopefully yours! Grab your sunscreen and let’s go!

You often see photos of celebrities walking out of an airport at some exotic location with a very stylish outfit, and dressed perfectly for the climate. Well it helps that they have people to take care of those details for them, but you’ll be happy to know that with just a little effort, and some well thought out pieces, you too can look very stylish and comfortable at the airport. In my case, one of the biggest problems is packing to start the day in below freezing temperatures and finishing in tropical heat. I need to keep myself warm while flying from 28° in the early morning at Detroit, to 85° at the midday heat of Cancun. The last thing you want to do is lug a winter coat along with you on vacation, so my best bet and yours is layering. Luckily it’s easy to stay stylish while you’re adding layers that pull the double duty of keeping you from freezing. Once you get out of the always too cold for me airplane, you can peel the pieces off until you suit your new surroundings. I have some go-to pieces that are my travel essentials, and were just right for a Detroit to Cancun spring break. First, I topped it off with my favorite white fedora hat. Next, was a matching long white suit vest. This piece is basically a sleeveless coat and does a great job of keeping my core comfy while letting my arms move around freely.

I always have to keep my signature splash of bright, especially when going to someplace sunny and warm. So I grabbed my neon color bag and, to protect my eyes from all that sunshine, my coordinated yellow sunnies. Our flight from Detroit left very early. Actually crazy early but that’s another subject! Anyway, to keep the last day of winter chill away, I chose to wear a very warm grey sweater over a cool black tank top. Pairing with my trusty ripped skinnies and booties is always a fashion win. Your shoe selection is very important, especially on a flight day. A good choice for travel is a comfy pair of sports shoes. The down side of these is they are a bit difficult to pull off looking stylish while wearing them. They just aren’t as easy to coordinate as you would hope. This is not the case with wedges, booties and sandals, so those are all good choices for travel days. Remember, you want to be effortlessly stylish, so that means you don’t want to try too hard. I saw a woman dressed in her trendiest clothes but she wore much too high heeled boots. Every airplane I’ve ever been on had pretty narrow aisles and not much foot room, so this type of footwear makes a lot more sense packed in your suitcase than on your feet.

And keep in mind that in the US at least, you have to take off those shoes at the security check point. The last things you need are some over the knee boots that take a friend to help you get them off on a good day! The key for departure day is to make sure your footwear is easy off and on. Once we arrived in Cancun, it was instantly clear that I was overdressed for the climate. I always pack a few warm weather items in my carryon and head for the restroom while my busboy/husband is waiting for our suitcase to unload. I take this opportunity to change out of my booties and into some comfy cool flats and stash away my sweater, and then I’m ready to go. If you’re worried that you’ll still be too warm, you can make sure you’re cool both in temperature and style by slipping into your favorite pair of cutoff jean shorts with a leopard print long sleeve shirt. If you’re like me, you’re often cold, especially with the AC blasting on you. Then the best protection is to make sure to cover your shoulders. I have an essential cashmere scarf that I never travel without, for just this reason. It is an incredibly useful piece; it’s lightweight, packs down to a very small package and most important, can keep you warm in a car, bus or plane. Please come back tomorrow for some more travel tips!
