Is it supposed to make that noise?

As I hope you know, I’ve been writing about how I learned to drive after moving to America. My fiancé was my driving teacher and his old little car was my practice target! We had survived my first lesson without driving in the nearby lake so after a day or two to recover I was ready to give it another go. Maybe this time I would even get the car out of first gear! The adventures we had driving in our local cemetery ended on a scary note so we thought maybe we would try somewhere else for lesson 2. My fiancé/driving teacher made his way over to a large parking lot on the other side of our small town. This lot was mostly for workers at a local insurance company and was mostly empty after 5pm when they all went home. It was a pretty big lot with nothing but a few light poles to get in my way so it seemed like a safe place to practice. As with the first lesson I stalled the car several times until I got used to using the clutch and gear shift again. I could get going pretty fast before I had to slow down and turn so after several slow laps around the lot, it was time to shift into second gear!

I managed to push down the clutch, move the shifter back from first into second gear position and let the clutch out. Too quickly! The car jumped and shook and jerked around. I wasn’t expecting it so hit the brake; but without putting the clutch back in! So of course there was some more shaking and bumping until it stalled and everything was quiet again. Everything except for my “driving instructor” who was busy trying to “teach” me what I had just done wrong. I’m always very proud of our relationship and 99% of the time we get along great. But there is that 1% when things aren’t quite as smooth. My future husband had grown up around cars as most Americans have. He even had gotten a little battery powered car that he could actually drive around when he was just a kid. Even though I am a “bit” younger than he is my experience with cars was almost none. I had been in taxis of course and my brother even had a small car that he would sometimes take me for a ride in but that wasn’t until I was an adult. Growing up I was lucky to get to ride on a bus once in a while! So my fiancé couldn’t understand how foreign this whole experience was to me. What he thought would be basic knowledge that EVERYBODY had, wasn’t part of my experience at all. And to me it was just as obvious that this whole driving thing was foreign to me because (pay attention) I AM A FOREIGNER!

In general though I have to say my guy is usually very patient with me. He has done a lot of travelling for his job and spent a long time in other countries. So he’s pretty good with understanding other cultures and how difficult it can be to work in a language you aren’t very fluent in. I think since we usually communicate pretty well, probably because we know each other so good, he sometimes forgets that I’m still thinking in Chinese, even though I’m hearing English. At least when I was learning to drive that was true. Now that I’ve been in America almost 8 years and using English most of the time it’s become a lot more natural. I think when I first really noticed that I wasn’t automatically translating in my mind was when I had my first dream in English! Anyway, back to driving lesson number 2, I started the car up again and got it into second gear a lot smoother this time. Around and around the lot we went until I almost got dizzy and it started to get dark. I was feeling a bit more comfortable now and looking forward to lesson number 3. At least I was until my “teacher” informed me that, since we were practicing in a parking lot, in the next lesson, I would park the car! Please come back next time to see how that went!
