See you and have a great day!
Do you LOVE your job? Oh well I hope at least you don’t hate your work. 😉 I am very lucky to have a job that I really love. Every day there is something that makes me laugh and feel good about myself. But somedays, I have trouble at work too so I like to entertain myself more by wearing a playful outfit. Life is short, I still have to work everyday, so why be so serious? Let’s have some fun! Because it is FRIDAY!
My driving story continues below, enjoy!
That’s the wrong seat!
As you hopefully know, I’ve been posting about how I learned to drive when I came to America from China. My future husband had decided he would be my teacher. Although this arrangement may not be the best idea for our long term relationship, it was certainly true that the price was right! If you’ve been riding along, welcome back! Also you will have read about my first several lessons. So far I hadn’t gotten very far away from the little town I was living in. We were about an hour drive away from the Detroit area where my fiancé worked as an engineer for an automotive supplier. Really, there isn’t much other reason to live here. Michigan is actually quite beautiful during the summer but the winters seemed to last about half the year. Back in China I had moved away from this kind of weather, but love sometimes makes you do silly things. So here I was, once again living in a place with nasty winter weather and learning how to drive. We had been practicing most evenings when my fiancé got home from work and of course on the weekends too.
But this weekend we were taking a break. My future mother and father in-laws lived about 200 miles away from us in northern Michigan. I know a lot of couples who have trouble because the wife or husband doesn’t get along with their spouse’s parents. This can be a huge source of conflict. So I knew I was very lucky with my future family. I love them. And it seemed they loved me too: And why not? I’m a VERY lovable person if I do say so myself. Anyway, we hadn’t made the 4 hour drive to see them in a few months and we thought it was time to visit for a weekend. They lived in a really small town. I thought my new hometown was tiny but compared to theirs it was a major city. But this part of Michigan is quite beautiful. It’s full of forests, lakes and rivers. On weekends in the summer, pretty much the whole Detroit area goes “up north” to spend time at a cottage or cabin or they spend a week or two of vacation in one of the hotels, parks or campgrounds. My future in-laws lived right on a golf course so we would sit on their back porch after a huge dinner my man’s mother would cook and watch the golfers walk by.
I had never driven on a freeway yet. So far in my lessons the fastest I had gone was 55 miles per hour on one of the straight mostly empty roads in our nearby countryside. The freeways had a speed limit of 70mph but it seemed like most drivers thought of that as just a suggestion. If you were in the left lane you had better be driving at a good 10 or 15 miles per hour faster of someone would be right on your back bumper. This lane was called the fast lane for a good reason! I definitely needed some more practice before I was ready for those roads so I made sure my future husband was behind the wheel. Once we got an hour or so north of Detroit the traffic started to thin out. About every 40 or 50 miles there is a rest area on the freeway. These are places where you can pull off and park. There’s a bathroom, picnic tables, a place for you to take your dog for a walk and usually some machines where you can buy a soft drink or snack. These are very convenient because you don’t really have to leave the freeway to stop. Once you start driving again the only choice you have is to go back onto the freeway. So my “instructor” pulled off at one of these for a short break. As we women know, it’s never a good idea to pass up an opportunity to use the bathroom, so that’s where I headed. After all, we still had a long drive ahead of us. My fiancé also used the men’s room. Usually he’s a bit faster than I am and waits for me outside the women’s room. But when I came out, he was nowhere to be found. I thought maybe his “rest” was a bit more involved than usual so looked around for a while at the announcements and maps on the wall. Still no one. Eventually I looked out at our car and saw that my fiancé was sitting in it already. But something wasn’t right. He was sitting in my seat and the driver’s seat was empty. What was he thinking? Oh…that’s not good.
