Yes, the go-to denim style of this summer is the second-graders overalls look. 😉 It is everywhere and it is back and better than ever. Try this easygoing style with a crop top for a night out with the gals or on the weekends with a T-shirt and slip-on sneakers. Want something even more cool and playful? Just add a pair of edgy heels and some mirrored sunglasses. You’ll be the trendiest girl on the street!

If something can bring a more youthful look to me, I’d love to see it! Of course I must also look polished and elegant. 😉 How do you style your overalls? Are you willing to give it a try this summer?

There she is!

We hadn’t been having much luck in finding a car for me. The small town we lived in had very few options and we went through those pretty quickly. So we started looking farther away. My husband worked very near to Detroit so started buying the Detroit news paper to see some of the advertisements. We even would walk through a used car sales lot after they were closed sometimes. One of the problems with shopping for a car is that after my husband got home from work and we ate dinner these places were usually closed. We would try to find new places to go that had a better selection so we could make the most out of our limited time. We finally decided that we would try to visit several of these dealerships on the next Saturday. So we got up early, ate breakfast and headed out. It takes about an hour for us to get to the Detroit area from our small town so it was already late morning before we got to the first cars. Just like at the used car dealers near our town there wasn’t anything we liked; at least not that we could afford. We went to the next place but got the same result. The third dealer was even worse! We had stopped to eat some lunch so by now it was the middle of the afternoon.

I was beginning to worry that we wouldn’t find anything on this trip too! But there was one more dealer on our list. Let’s see what they have. We got to the lot and took a look and test drive. It was a pretty nice car but just didn’t feel right for me. I was more and more deciding that for my first car we should probably go down in what we were going to pay. We drove back to the lot and told the salesman we weren’t interested. By now the dealer was getting ready to close soon. We figured we may as well take a walk around the lot to see if there was anything that looked good. There in the far corner I saw it. Finally, we found her! A white Ford Taurus. It was in pretty good condition. Maybe a couple small dents and scratches but not bad. It had been driven a lot of miles but because of that the price was right! So we took her (I knew the car was a “she” because she was quite pretty) for a test ride. It was GREAT not having to shift the gears! The car was a little bigger than our little car but not much. So I thought I could get used to it pretty easily. We went back to the dealership and told the salesman that we would take it!

We Chinese love to bargain when we buy almost anything. Unless you are in a department store you can usually get whatever it is you want to buy cheaper than the asking price. But you have to work at it! So now I went to work! We offered our starting price and the salesman came back with a slight reduction in the price on the car. We went back and forth a few times and finally agreed on a price of $2,500. This wasn’t super cheap but a lot less than most of the cars we had been looking at. We gave them a small deposit and then got back into our little car to drive home. When you buy a car you have to prepare first. It’s not like buying some new clothes or furniture. First you have to get insurance. Then you have to arrange to get a license plate for it. Sometimes you have to get a loan from a bank to pay for it. Anyway, since this was a Saturday and already late afternoon, none of those things would be possible to do until Monday morning. Plus there was one other problem. We didn’t have a way to get the car back to our home! I was still taking my driving lessons so couldn’t drive a car by myself. We had to get back to the dealership with our little car so that meant we needed another driver! Come back to see how we solved that problem!

Chambray shirts are the new one size fits all fashion piece. Along with a casual weekend look, It can go with a pencil skirt or blazer to create a more modern style business casual vibe. It also can go with a girly skirt to project a tough but still feminine image. This is truly a must have piece to pull a boho outfit together as well. I guess most of you have a chambray shirt in your closet. What I love the most about a chambray shirt is the youthful feeling it can bring. How do you wear your chambray shirt?

The story of my car shopping continues below…

Shopping? I can do this! Car shopping? Maybe I can do this!

I had a car dream. Or is that a dream car? Anyway, when I was younger and deciding how famous and successful I would be, my vision was to drive to Beijing, China’s capital city. And I’d do it in my Mercedes Benz. But my reality was a bit different. I fully expected my first car to pay the price for my inexperience. My new vision included the scratches and dents I guessed I would put on my car until I got a bit more used to this whole driving thing. So I scaled back my requirements a bit. We decided that I would probably be better off with an American car. One reason was that if it needed some repairs it would probably be easier and cheaper to find parts or a place to work on it. Well if I had to back off on my Mercedes, how about a Cadillac? That was American. They were even made in Detroit! I guessed I could probably live with one of those. We started looking around. You see a lot of second hand cars and trucks sitting by the road when you are driving around and we began to pay more attention to those. Usually they were trying to be sold by the owner of the car. The other choice was to go to a used car dealer. Our small town had a few of these too. But I was finding out that even a second hand Cadillac was out of my price range!

Another thing I didn’t like when my husband explained it to me was that these big fancy cars usually needed to use the more expensive premium gasoline. The final thing that changed my mind was the size of these cars. They were usually quite big! I had been driving our car for my lessons and practice and it was pretty tiny. It only had 2 doors and I felt sorry for anyone who had to sit in the back seat. It was very small and uncomfortable. But the good thing was that it was easier to get into a parking spot because of its size. I was worried that a big car would give me more trouble parking than I already had! Anyway, maybe I had to drop my requirements a bit more! So we started coming up with a list of “must haves”. First on that list was an automatic shifter! My husband told me that would not be a problem. Even though he had the manual gear shift in his car there weren’t many people in America that had them. They were getting less and less popular too. So probably 90% of the second hand cars we saw were automatics. I wanted something a bit bigger than our little car. That would make me feel safer with a bit of metal around me! And I thought having 4 doors would be easier and more comfortable if we had some extra people in our car.

There were a couple other things on the list like front wheel drive which was a lot better for driving in snow. It would be nice to have things like power windows and a nice radio. Our little car didn’t have power anything! And of course, it had to be good looking! After all, I do have an image to think of! But we also had a pretty small budget to work with. I hadn’t been in the country that long and wasn’t doing anything to make money so we were limited to whatever my husband could put away after we paid all our bills. We went to the used car dealers in town and stopped at some of the cars we saw next to the road. But we couldn’t seem to find anything that was just right! So now we started looking a bit further from home. We went to the next town and then the one after that. But it was the same story. All the towns around us were just as small as ours or even smaller so there just wasn’t a very good selection to choose from. I was starting to wonder if I’d ever find my car! Find the answer in my next post!
