The story of my car shopping continues below…
Shopping? I can do this! Car shopping? Maybe I can do this!
I had a car dream. Or is that a dream car? Anyway, when I was younger and deciding how famous and successful I would be, my vision was to drive to Beijing, China’s capital city. And I’d do it in my Mercedes Benz. But my reality was a bit different. I fully expected my first car to pay the price for my inexperience. My new vision included the scratches and dents I guessed I would put on my car until I got a bit more used to this whole driving thing. So I scaled back my requirements a bit. We decided that I would probably be better off with an American car. One reason was that if it needed some repairs it would probably be easier and cheaper to find parts or a place to work on it. Well if I had to back off on my Mercedes, how about a Cadillac? That was American. They were even made in Detroit! I guessed I could probably live with one of those. We started looking around. You see a lot of second hand cars and trucks sitting by the road when you are driving around and we began to pay more attention to those. Usually they were trying to be sold by the owner of the car. The other choice was to go to a used car dealer. Our small town had a few of these too. But I was finding out that even a second hand Cadillac was out of my price range!
Another thing I didn’t like when my husband explained it to me was that these big fancy cars usually needed to use the more expensive premium gasoline. The final thing that changed my mind was the size of these cars. They were usually quite big! I had been driving our car for my lessons and practice and it was pretty tiny. It only had 2 doors and I felt sorry for anyone who had to sit in the back seat. It was very small and uncomfortable. But the good thing was that it was easier to get into a parking spot because of its size. I was worried that a big car would give me more trouble parking than I already had! Anyway, maybe I had to drop my requirements a bit more! So we started coming up with a list of “must haves”. First on that list was an automatic shifter! My husband told me that would not be a problem. Even though he had the manual gear shift in his car there weren’t many people in America that had them. They were getting less and less popular too. So probably 90% of the second hand cars we saw were automatics. I wanted something a bit bigger than our little car. That would make me feel safer with a bit of metal around me! And I thought having 4 doors would be easier and more comfortable if we had some extra people in our car.
There were a couple other things on the list like front wheel drive which was a lot better for driving in snow. It would be nice to have things like power windows and a nice radio. Our little car didn’t have power anything! And of course, it had to be good looking! After all, I do have an image to think of! But we also had a pretty small budget to work with. I hadn’t been in the country that long and wasn’t doing anything to make money so we were limited to whatever my husband could put away after we paid all our bills. We went to the used car dealers in town and stopped at some of the cars we saw next to the road. But we couldn’t seem to find anything that was just right! So now we started looking a bit further from home. We went to the next town and then the one after that. But it was the same story. All the towns around us were just as small as ours or even smaller so there just wasn’t a very good selection to choose from. I was starting to wonder if I’d ever find my car! Find the answer in my next post!
