I am only 5 feet tall and that’s not very uncommon in China. Northern Chinese are usually a little bit taller but my height is about average for southern Chinese. So if there are some tall Chinese girls walking on the street, they will turn a lot of heads.

Liu Wen (刘雯 Liú Wén) is one of them, she is 5’11 and she is a Chinese fashion model. She is the first model of East Asian descent to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. In 2010, she became the first spokesmodel of Asian descent for Estée Lauder. In 2012, The New York Times named her “China’s first bona fide supermodel”. In 2013, she became the first Asian model to ever make Forbes magazine’s annual highest-paid models list.

But many Chinese don’t consider Liu Wen to be a classical Chinese beauty. What Chinese like is big eyes, double layered eyelids, a small face, a pointy chin and very pale skin like a doll. Chinese don’t like very strong three-dimensional features, like a clear jaw line or a very tall nose. They are obsessed with white skin and they love blond hair. There are so many young Chinese girls who regularly dye their naturally dark hair to make it a light brown or blond color. Every year when I visited China, if I went to the hair salon, the hair stylist always tried to persuade me to dye my hair. 😉

In an April 2014 article about social media’s rise in the fashion industry, American Vogue remarked that Liu Wen had “by far, the biggest social-media audience of any model”. Models.com dubbed her as the first ever Asian “New Supermodel” in July 2014. And in October of the same year, Liu Wen became the first person in the world to showcase an Apple Watch on a magazine cover when she graced Vogue China’s November 2014 issue.

Since Liu Wen reached this great success in the fashion world, with her quirky, boyish style, her easy smile and darker skin tone, she became the roll model to a lot of modern young Chinese to find more confidence and individuality in the way they dress.

Here is my new look for today. And remember, I am only 5 feet tall and my photo studio is my backyard. So don’t judge! 😉
