What IS that smell?
If you’ve been reading my blog you know I moved to the Detroit area to be with my future husband. And he lives in this area because he works for an automotive supplier and, among other things. Detroit is famous for being the Motor City. His company does some pretty nice things for their employees. For example every December since I moved here we’ve gone to a very nice Christmas party. Everyone dresses up, there’s dinner, music, dancing and lots of gifts that are given away. In years past he’s won dinner and a movie but some people even walk out with a flat screen TV! At the very least we have a great night and leave with a nice bottle of wine. This last weekend his company added another cool thing by sponsoring a night at the Detroit Zoo. The regular hours to go look at the animals are from 9am to 5pm but on Friday local employees and their families had the Zoo to ourselves from 6pm until they kicked us out at 9pm. The company also had a BBQ dinner arranged. We had burgers and hotdogs, baked beans and soft drinks.
After that we wandered around the Zoo. Even though we only lived about 20 minutes away I had never been to the Detroit Zoo. In fact I hadn’t been to one in America. My husband and I went to the Munich Zoo in Germany when we were there a few years ago but this was my first time in this country. We had a GREAT time! We even did a couple things that were probably meant for kids but we didn’t care. They had a whole area set up with realistic looking and moving dinosaurs. They were growling, showing their huge teeth and some of them even spit water at you! Since we had just seen the Jurassic World movie a week before it was easy to imagine what it would be like coming across one of these monsters several million years ago! We also went on a ride on the carousel. As you can see in the photos I had a lot of fun there! And even the weather was cooperative. It wasn’t too hot or cold and the rain held off until later that night. These places can get a little rough on the nose on a hot calm day!
Unfortunately we didn’t get to see all the animals but now that I’ve been there once I think we’ll go back. There is a membership you can buy that lets you get in as many times as you like. It’s not a bad deal at all especially since it’s so close. I’m not sure how this place got its name though. The Zoo isn’t really in Detroit. In fact it’s a couple miles outside of the city in nearby Royal Oak. This is even better though, because this little town has some great restaurants, shopping and entertainment; which makes going to the Zoo an even better idea. After watching the wild animals walking around in their enclosures during the day we can go downtown in the evening and watch the wild animals walking around the sidewalks after a long happy hour! And I even learned something that night. I had always thought Zoo was a regular word but my husband pointed out that it’s really short for Zoological Park. I thought to myself, that is quite an abbreviation! And then I wondered why abbreviation is such a long word? It sort of defeats the whole purpose! And people wonder why I prefer Chinese!
