My life story in America

My life story in America— A candlelight dinner! How romantic…NOT!

I am on my vacation from 7/18-28, I will not be able to answer your comments but I still love to see them when I am back. 😉

It was a nice Saturday early evening just a couple weeks ago. My husband and I had just finished a tasty dinner and were still sitting at the dining table talking like we usually do. We noticed the wind was picking up but didn’t think much of it. All of a sudden the chandelier flashed and we heard ZZZZTTTT! Flash. ZZZZTTTT! Flash! ZZZZZZZTTTTTT! Good news/bad news. No more flashes. AND no more lights. The radio, that had moments before been playing George Ezra’s Budapest for the 18th time that day, was silent. Great song by the way, but enough is enough! It was already after 8pm but this time of year in Michigan it stays light out pretty late. We did what a lot of people in our neighborhood do in a situation like this. We went outside to see if it was only us or if the neighbors were in the dark too. There on our left was our neighbor that was about 8 ½ months pregnant but said it felt like 11 and she was darned ready to get that baby out of her belly! They were out of power too. On our right was the super nice older couple from Eastern Europe. He was retired and had lived in our neighborhood about as long as anyone. He knew pretty much everyone and everything that was going on. And sure enough, his house was also dark. On the plus side it was actually quite comfortable that day so the fact that no one had air conditioning wasn’t terrible.

Pretty soon a fire truck came around the corner and then another. The local station is less than ½ mile away. They drove several houses down the road and stopped. By now reports were trickling in from the more adventurous (maybe nosey) neighbors who had investigated the area. A tree had fallen over in the wind and decided to take several of the electric lines with it. It would certainly be several hours before the lights came back on. We lit some candles around the house and my husband went down to the basement where we keep our camping equipment. If you’ve read my blog for any time you know that camping is pretty much over for us ever since the Great Frozen Toes Night of 2008. I’m not sure why my husband insists on keeping a tent around since there’s pretty much zero chance I will ever use it again! But on the plus side we have a battery powered lamp and radio that he brought up and turned on. We are pretty lucky in our house because we have a gas water heater and it works even if there is no electricity. So with no TV to watch or computer to blog on we decided we may as well take a shower and go to bed. We were pretty sure the power would be back on before we woke up. After all, it usually was.

Not this time! When Sunday morning came around it was still pretty quiet. We had a battery backup for our cell phones so were able to stay in touch. The app from the local electric company had some disturbing news! It might not be until Monday night before we were up and running! The first thing my husband did was go out to buy a generator. This is basically a motor you put gas in and it makes electricity. We had thought about getting one for several years and decided this was finally the time. We seem to lose our power at least once or twice a year for long enough for the frozen food to start thawing out. After he got back we still needed a few things for the machine to work but I was hungry! So breakfast came first. Our stove is electric so that left going out as the only choice. After filling our tummies, my husband filled the generator with oil and gas and pulled the cord. A bit noisy but he plugged in some long cords and within a couple seconds our freezer was freezing and our basement sump pump was pumping! This was MUCH better! Now that our emergency was over what do you guess was my next move? Of course I had my husband plug in the modem so our wifi would work and move my Mac into the living room so I could work on my blog! He uses the word “crazy” but I like to think of myself as “dedicated”! It was a bright sunny day so we even went out a few times to take some photos for my posts. We were getting the hang of having at least a little electricity. My husband got his BBQ going and we had a delicious dinner. We even had a glass of wine! After all, just because we were roughing it didn’t mean we had to be uncivilized! After, we went for a long walk in our subdivision. I couldn’t believe it but just about every other house had a generator chugging away in the driveway or garage and extension cords were running everywhere! I thought of my home in China and knew that if we had lost power there, we would just have to sit in the dark until it was fixed. We had only been back to our house for a few minutes when we heard the neighbors cheering. Then the lights came on and we knew why. Yes! I hate when my house isn’t organized so before I let my husband get ready for bed he had to put my computer back in my office and roll up all the cords. Just because he had to get up early to go to work didn’t mean I should suffer when I got out of bed late Monday morning. I was pretty caught up with my posts now so figured I deserved to sleep in! Huh, I think I just heard my husband call me “dedicated” again!
