Home phones

Home phones

E.T. do NOT phone home!

I am on my vacation from 7/18-28, I will not be able to answer your comments but I still love to see them when I am back. 😉

When I moved to America I was surprised how many people still have a home phone land line. I’m one of those people. Well, I should say my husband is. I guess I understand the original reason. When I came here we were getting my Visa, then Green Card, then Citizenship and we had used our home phone on all the different applications. But not only are all those things in the distant past (I’ve been an American citizen for several years now) but we’ve even moved since that happened and had to get a NEW phone number! His other reason also isn’t real good any longer either. He said that if we ever had to call 911 to get the police or fire department or an ambulance, they would be able to find our home faster. But I’m pretty sure that technology has made that argument as old and out of date as my husband! I mean, we both have cell phones and use those way more than the home phone. In fact, when we lost our electric power a couple weeks ago, the home phone didn’t even work but the cell phones did. When I asked the “old time phone expert” about that, he didn’t have much of an answer. There are no family members that ever call our home number. I don’t think they even know that number!

The only people who ever call that phone are people we don’t really want to talk to anyway! People trying to sell us something or want us to give them something. We have Caller ID on the home phone so we can see the number and sometimes the name of the caller. More often than not the name is “NO CALLER ID” or “WIRELESS NUMBER” or “UNAVAILABLE”. Well if they are unavailable you can be very certain we are too! So, what’s the point I ask my husband, Alexander Grandpa Bell? If the caller ID tells you it’s someone you don’t want to talk to, you don’t answer. If it doesn’t tell you anything useful, you also don’t answer. We’ll come home from a day out shopping or some less important activity and see the answering machine flashing with 1, 2 or 3 new messages. We hit the play button and listen to either silence then the sound of a phone hanging up OR the sales pitch we wouldn’t have listened to if we HAD been home!

I think he may finally be coming around. He’s even started to look into if we could save a little money each month by getting rid of that phone. We are never without our iPhones any more. Not that this is always good news. Even on vacation he sometimes gets a work phone call and has to talk, but usually it’s only for a few minutes. It’s pretty obvious the days of the home phone land line are numbered. I mean our computers, cell phones and tablets are all wireless. And when we’re out and about, wifi is so widely available there’s pretty much no need for an old fashioned phone. When my choice is having a phone I can carry with me for 2000 miles and it still lets me call anyone I want or lets them call me and a phone that can’t get more than 20 feet from where the wire is plugged into the wall it’s pretty much a no brainer. So I’m going to have my husband look into getting rid of the home phone some more. At least I will when he’s back inside. He had to go out and yell at some of the neighborhood kids to “get off of our lawn!” Oh well. Baby steps…
