Travel recap New York State of Mind

I made it! The Big Apple. NYC. Finally. I’d been to bigger cities. Shanghai, Beijing and Seoul all had more people in them. But none of them had so many places that so many people had dreamed of for so long. Times Square; Broadway, 5th Avenue, Wall Street, Radio City Music Hall, Central park and of course, the Statue of Liberty have been at the center of countless books, movies, songs and stories. So how could I be anything else but PUMPED UP! It was a Tuesday mid-morning in July and we were on our way to our hotel in the Fashion District. Yes, you read that right. A Fashion Blogger staying in New York City’s Fashion District! Can you say “Dream Come True?” We popped out of the Lincoln Tunnel after crossing under the Hudson River from New Jersey and immediately missed our turn! We didn’t really have a choice. Whatever lane you got stuck in was where you stayed and it took you where it wanted you to go instead of where you wanted. Oh well, we only had about 15 or 20 short blocks to go so how long could it take? FYI, that’s another one of those questions I will try never to ask again! Traffic in Manhattan is S…L…O…W! And the lanes seem to come and go in no particular pattern. Of course, the delivery trucks blocking one or two extra lanes while they dropped off their packages didn’t help either. And then there was the always present swarm of NYC taxis. It was kind of like being a slow moving fish in a river of yellow water that was swirling all around us. I think the drive from the tunnel to our hotel probably only took about a half hour but it seemed like a half a day of HONK! or “WATCH OUT!” or SCREECH! Luckily though, all the yellow paint stayed on the taxis and none got on our car.

As I mentioned, I’ve been to bigger cities but I’ve never driven in any of those places. Well in full disclosure, I didn’t actually drive in New York City either. That’s one of the main reasons I HAVE a husband! Besides, it makes him feel important and like he’s actually in charge. He’s sort of cute and naïve that way. Anyway, the point is we never had a car in Asia so didn’t have to worry about where to put it. In Manhattan especially, it seems that after you risk your life and car by daring to drive on their streets that they reward your bravery by charging crazy money to let you not drive on them! We were looking at signs outside parking garages saying $45, $55 even $65 for 24 short hours! Wow! And here I had a problem putting a few coins in the parking meter in some of the cities near our home. Well we found our hotel and my chauffeur, uh, er, husband ran in to find out where to park the car. We were using up some free hotel stay points he had collected from his business travel so we had a couple free nights in the Hilton Fashion District Hotel. Even at a Hilton they didn’t have parking on their property. But they did have a special rate at the garage just down the street. A bargain at only $42 per night! Oh well, if you want to play, you’ve got to pay. So we pulled in, grabbed our bags and handed the keys to the attendant. He drove my Snow Princess down a ramp and disappeared around a corner. I was just hoping I would see her again in one piece! We went back to our hotel, checked in and went to explore.

I had worried up quite an appetite by now so our first stop was for some lunch. On a trip to Hong Kong a few years ago we had experienced our first Michelin Star rated dining. And we were hooked. So for my Christmas gift 2 years ago my porter, oops, husband (I really need to stop that) got me the NYC Michelin Guide. We had that with us and found a little Spanish tapas place not too far from our hotel. It took us a little while to figure out that not every restaurant in the book had actually earned a star. It maybe was just recommended. As we did more research we decided that since all the real Michelin places were in the house payment range for an average dinner maybe we would be OK with a bit lower standard. But I can honestly say we didn’t have any bad meals during our stay in Manhattan. And we had quite a variety. That first evening we followed up our Spanish lunch with a Korean dinner and threw in the food from several other countries before we left the city. So Day 1 was coming to a close and I declared it a success. We had eaten, drank, shopped, walked and drove, all without even a minor disaster. In my book that was a win! We went back to our room and got ready for the next day’s adventure! And the best thing is; you’re coming along!
