I just read an article where they compared the spending habits of Chinese who were born in the decade of the 1970s to those from the ‘80s and ‘90s. The older, or I should say “more experienced” since I’m from that first group, are generally very careful with money. We like to have a safety net in the bank and will try very hard to save a bit from every payday. Those from the ‘80s are more likely to have a mortgage and car payment and carry a balance on their credit cards. The youngest group pretty much spends it as fast as they can make it; sometimes even faster! It’s all about instant gratification. That last bracket may not fit my husband’s age but it does describe his financial philosophy perfectly! When I came here and we got married it was pretty clear that I needed to be in charge of the budget if we were to have any chance of saving some money. But my husband was OK with that and we have still managed to have a pretty comfortable life. I still don’t like the idea but have accepted the fact that I will probably always have a mortgage payment. I was able to do something about our cars though. I had been saving for a couple years. My idea was we could pay off my husband’s car early and that extra money from the payment we didn’t have to make would end up in my bank account! Well, I was half right. We did pay off the loan but that money seemed to just disappear on something else. So recently I decided maybe we should have a bit of fun with it instead. With that in mind I gave my husband/travel agent a small budget and told him to get me out of the house for a weekend.

We had been talking about doing some wine tasting and I had also mentioned that now that I no longer hated autumn as much, I would like to see some of the colorful leaves that are common this time of year. Now when it comes to planning how to clean the basement, work on the yard or get rid of that pile of magazines and newspapers that NEVER seems to disappear, my dear husband struggles. BUT when tasked with planning where to go to have fun and what to do on the way he jumps into high gear with maps, lists of activities and sightseeing opportunities and a printout of restaurants he learned about during his research! Hmmm, maybe I should hide his maps under that pile of magazines and tell him we can’t go anywhere until he digs down to them! Anyway, just a few hours away from our Detroit area home is Michigan’s wine country. There are several areas near Lake Michigan that have vineyards and wineries. As usual, my husband got a little over ambitious with his travel plans. He had us stopping at two wineries, an apple orchard and an antique store before we even got to the town we would spend the night in. With the almost 3 hour drive to the starting point we would have had to wake up about 6am. On a Saturday. MY Saturday. After I reminded Mr. Early Bird that I am a Fashion Blogger, not an Army Soldier, he scaled back to something a bit more reasonable. I packed my required 4 changes of clothes: Hey, we were staying overnight you know! We got in the car and headed west.

The first stop was in the small town with the very cool name of Paw Paw, Michigan. This town is home to several wineries and we pulled into the first one we came to. The online article my husband had found mentioned how picturesque this place was and we were excited to see the view. OK, where was it? There was something about a river; what, that little stream? Some historic building, well that tiny one there was sorta old. OK, I guess so. Oh well, let’s check out the tasting room. That’s not too bad, $5 for 6 samples of wine. Now you’re talking! We were on our second sample when I asked the young guy pouring the wine where the grape vines were. Oh, that. Uh, they aren’t here anymore. The city sort of closed in and now they grow the grapes several miles out of town. We were a bit disappointed with the view but not with the wine and brought home a case to prove it! We got back in the car just before a super heavy rain and slowly made our way to the Bed & Breakfast Inn Mr. Traveler had found. We had stayed in a few B&Bs since we’ve been married and they are always interesting. This one was in the very beautiful little town of Marshall. There were a lot of really nice houses in town and one had been made into The Way Inn where we stayed. The location was within walking distance of a restaurant my husband had been to when he was a child! I asked him how long it took to drive there with the horse and wagon but he didn’t seem to think it was funny. Old people really don’t have much of a sense of humor! After dinner we drove a few minutes to a nearby casino. How did we do? Let’s just say we’re still working our day jobs. Next time for sure! We went back to the Inn and then took a short walk to a nearby brewery. This part was my husband’s idea but you probably already guessed that! It had been a long day so we were happy to get back to our room and climb into bed. And I do mean climb! This bed was so high I was worried that if I fell out during the night I would probably break something! The next morning, our hosts served a delicious breakfast and we chatted with them and another couple who had stayed the night. That’s one of the cool things about a B&B; you meet and actually talk to other people. A quick photo shoot then back to change clothes one last time for the return ride. The weather was much nicer for our drive home and we saw lots of blue sky, and orange, yellow and red leaves. Well, I do love color! I also loved our weekend getaway. I may not have quite as much savings as I’d like but good food, good drink, good people and good times are like money in the bank. And you don’t have to pay income taxes on them!

  2. I could use some traveling, B&B and winery’s right now. What a disappointment that the winery was no longer there. You and your hubby make quite the team and have different gifts and all which is awesome. Lovely fall/winter outfit.

  3. What a fun fall getaway! I totally agree with you about B&Bs. They are always our favorite to stay in and we love to use Air B&B for traveling around Europe! And again, I love your fur wrap 🙂

  4. Lucky you! It’s always nice to get away for the weekend. I agree about the older generations of the Chinese people where almost all of them are always on the savings mode. I’m one of them but I do try to balance it by spending some money on things I like and also try to take a vacation here and there. I think my husband is internally a Chinese…always save save save LOL!
