Well, we made it to New York’s JFK airport. The flight was noisy, the landing rough and scary but here we were on the ground and looking into the best way to get to our hotel in Manhattan’s Financial District. We knew taxis were expensive and because there was really no day or time that it wasn’t rush hour in the Big Apple, we asked around for some advice. The man who was working at the airport shuttle train suggested taking the “A Train”. He explained this was the express route and we’d be there in no time. I had been using subways and trains for many years so thought this made sense. Nothing like a nice modern, clean train for a relaxing trip downtown. We got off the airport shuttle at the subway station, got some help to make sure we bought the correct Metro Card and went downstairs to what can only be described as a mixture of Arctic air with a slight odor of almost frozen bodily fluids. This far out of town the trains ran above the ground so the platform was right out there in what wound up being the coldest weekend for that date, EVER! We and the other passengers tried to hide in the partially blocked off area where the escalator dumped you off to wait for the A Train to roll up. Several minutes later (or it could be that my watch had frozen to a stop) it came creeping into the station and we boarded our car. My first glance around showed I was correct in my words but not in the meaning. This nasty, smelly old collection of subway cars really was nothing like a modern clean train. Unfortunately, that meant it wasn’t even close to resembling one!

And as far as the express part, it seemed that we stopped at a LOT of stations. And at every one it seemed that more people crowded on. Soon they were squeezing onto bench seats that were already overflowing. We tried to make ourselves and our two carryon bags smaller but it was still pretty tight. Luckily we got on early enough that we got to sit next to each other. Finally, we got to our stop and made our way off the rolling antique. But we weren’t finished yet, we had to get on another line to get near to our hotel. Like I said, I’ve been in a lot of subway stations but I have to say this one was not the most convenient. We saw a sign for where we wanted to go but it pointed up some stairs. So up we went, bags and all. Got to the top and read the signs. Wrong way. Hmmm. OK, back down, walk, down more, walk, up, up, ah, there we are. Got on the train and 2 quick stops later we were there. Went upstairs and almost died of hypothermia. OMG! We only had to go a couple blocks but, as my engineer husband explained, the wind was being funneled between the buildings and so was moving much faster. Like it was pushing us kind of faster. We crossed the street like we were being blown across it. But we found our hotel at the next corner and ran in. The good news was that the “express” train had taken so long that we were actually able to get into our room when we checked in. We had a bit of time to unthaw, change into something a little more suited for our trip to the North Pole and head out to our first fashion show. After all, even though we had shown up during a record setting cold snap, we were there to work! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Fashion is NOT for wimps!

So, how to get there. I was NOT looking forward to walking back to the subway station. And I had no idea how far the walk was on the other end of the train trip either. So we decided it was about time that we finally dipped our toe into the Uber pool. I had heard about the ride sharing service for a long time. Both my and my husband’s co-workers gave it high marks but we had never used it before. So my husband had already downloaded the app and set up his account and now it was time to try it out. I’m not sure if it was beginner’s luck but we LOVED it! We had a car within a couple minutes and they took us directly to the Leanne Marshall show and the best part is the cost was less than $10! In Manhattan! So after the flight of your nightmares, the nasty old A train and almost freezing solid walking to our hotel, things were finally starting to look up. The show was awesome and we had another successful Uber experience back to our hotel for a wardrobe change and short rest. We went on to use Uber several more times and that experience was one of the highlights of the trip. We never could figure out the formula of how much it would cost. Every single trip had a different price. But at least you knew going in what that cost would be. I love surprises on my birthday but not so much when I’m travelling!

We were also pretty happy with our hotel location. For this trip we were right at the bottom tip of Manhattan, just across the street from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. Within a short walk were quite a few historic and interesting places to eat and drink. One of these had the interesting name of Dead Rabbit and led to an equally interesting story. My husband had found the place on Yelp and we were headed out for a late dinner. Wanting to make sure where we were walking he thought he’d ask the front desk. We got off the elevator, saw the woman who had helped check us in along with her manager. My husband looked at them and said “Dead Rabbit?” Blank stares and silence. Thinking they hadn’t heard, my husband repeated, a bit louder this time. “DEAD RABBIT?” The hotel employees looked at each other and then back at us and said, “where?” “That’s my question” my husband answered. And then went on to tell them it’s a bar in the neighborhood and we wanted to go there. You could see the relief flooding into the manager’s face as he finally understood that we weren’t asking him to come remove a large deceased rodent from our room. He got on the computer and told us turn right, right again, left and we’d be there.

The place was packed but we enjoyed a refreshment in the first floor Taproom until a couple seats opened up in the dining area. It wasn’t any less crowded up there but we sat at the bar and studied the menu. Yelp reviewers had mentioned the pork belly sliders and that’s the first thing we had. OMG! They were incredible! We had pretty much skipped lunch but made up for it that evening. There are definitely worse places to be than Manhattan when you’re hungry! It was hard to believe this was still just the first day of our whirlwind trip, but it had ended on a much better note than it began. The cold stayed around the next day too. But since it was Valentine’s Day and I was at New York Fashion Week I didn’t mind so much. At least the sun was shining. I think the wind chill got up to almost zero even! Uber was still coming through and I was loving the fashion shows we attended. We had a very nice romantic dinner at an Italian restaurant near our hotel and went back to our room for the night. I wanted to get an early start for our next and final day. A couple hours to do some shopping and then head to the airport. After the rough trip we had getting to NYC we figured our luck would have to change for the return flight, right? Oh, it changed alright. Just not in the direction we had hoped! Come back to read the details!
