Life After Loss – Ten Years in America

Life After Loss – Ten Years in America

April 19th – it is just a normal day for most of you, but for me, it is a life changing date that I probably will remember forever. Ten years ago, on that day, I came to America and started my new life in Michigan. When I stepped out of the airport, I was shocked. I couldn’t read any signs on the road and I couldn’t understand anything others were saying. I was totally lost. But I knew I had my man and he would be my bridge to this whole new world. As long as I had him, I was not afraid.

My man and I met in Shanghai. I knew no English and he only could say “hi,” “goodbye,” “thank you,” and “beer” in Chinese (this may or may not be an improvement over my stepdaughter who to this day knows “melon”, “watermelon,” “cantaloupe,” and “hi”). Through body language and a handy dictionary, we felt we had known each other for our whole lives. We knew what each other was thinking and we were always so happy to be together. So 10 years ago, I gave up my family, my career, my friends, and my life in Shanghai and came here to marry my man. But now he was gone. As you can imagine, I was quite blue a few days prior April 19th this year. I was not sure what I wanted to do on that day. I wanted to be happy and celebrate this special day, but I really wanted to do it with him, just like the past 9 years.

Traditionally, my husband and I always go to a Mexican restaurant to celebrate. You may ask why a Mexican restaurant? Why not a Chinese or American restaurant? It has to go back 10 years ago on 4/19. After 30+ hours of flights from China, I was super tired, and maybe a little grumpy too.;) My man knew I would not like the American Chinese food and I was not a fan of any western food at that time either. He really wanted to find something that I could enjoy, so he came up with a great idea. He thought since Chinese and Mexicans both like rice, I must like Mexican food. 😉 By the way, in China, Mexican food is very rare and I only had Taco Bell before in Shanghai. I can honestly tell you, the dinner my first day was a disaster. It was so bad, in fact, I was worried that I may starve to death in this country. Anyway, we often laughed at that day and every year we eat Mexican food to celebrate my first day in America.

This year the evening before 4/19, I was quite sad, but I didn’t want to cry because I was going to see Stacy London the next day. I really didn’t want big, puffy eyes for that important day. When I was working on my computer, suddenly my calendar popped up and said “Tomorrow Grace came to America for 10 years”. It was the reminder my man set on his phone and we shared our calendar. This finally triggered my tears. I cried for about an hour. I was so angry at whoever is responsible for taking my man away from me. Why me? Why him? Why us? I was also very sad because he would be so proud of me of for getting the chance to meet with Stacy London.

I posted my 10 years anniversary on my social media early that morning on April 19th. I was surprised to see there were a lot of people telling me congrats. I was like, “what can I be congratulated about?” It was a very sad day for me because of my husband ‘s departure. Later that day, I finally realized, yes, it is a day that I need to celebrate, even without him. For an individual human being, I did achieve a lot in the last decade. I found my true love and got married, had my first house, learned English, learned how to drive, learned American culture, got my own family, got my teaching certificate, got a full time teaching job, became a blogger and a TV co-host… and although now my man passed away, I am still holding my head up high and chasing my fashion dream.

My 10th anniversary of moving to America turned out to be one of the greatest days of my life. I hung out with Stacy London for the whole afternoon. You can read all the details here. I also met a new friend, Inez, who is a fellow blogger in Michigan and later we went to my favorite Mexican restaurant for dinner. We were talking about our lives and sipping margaritas. Life is still great!

10 years down, more great years to come!

Shopping Spring Fashion at Meijer with Stacy London – Part 1

I have been working with Meijer on several projects since last year. A couple weeks ago I got an email from them. After I read it, I almost fell off of my chair. What?!!! They were asking me to meet with their Massini fashion line spokesperson, Stacy London! The same Stacy London who had hosted the “What Not To Wear” show on TLC? Heck YES!

I watched so many of her shows, she even helped me learn English by watching them when I first moved to the USA. She is basically my fashion AND English teacher. 😉 In more recent years, I became a big fan of her breaking her own “What Not To Wear” era fashion rules and being true to aging and style. So for these reasons, there is a special place in my heart for her.

As you can imagine, I was super excited and nervous at the same time. What should I say? What should I do? Is she nice in real person? It turned out, last Wednesday became one of the best days of my life. 🙂

We met at the Social Kitchen & Bar in Birmingham, Michigan for lunch. When she walked in, she was smiling at everybody and apologizing for being late. She flew into Detroit early that morning and right after that she asked to go the Warren Meijer store to check out the products and layout for our afternoon shopping experience with her. She seriously didn’t have to do that, but she obviously wanted to make sure another local blogger and myself would have a pleasant experience with her. I really appreciated her professionalism.

During the lunch, we sat right across the table from each other. She is so pretty in person and I love how she mixed prints with her blazer and top. By the way, that pretty floral blazer is the fall collection from Massini line in Meijer. 😉 Stacy was so good at talking and listening to everybody and made each of us feel like we were very important to her. She asked us many questions and wanted to get to know us better. She asked me why I came to America, I said I came here to marry my husband. And then she said “I hope your husband will not be mad that we kept you here with us today” I couldn’t help but shed some tears. I told her about my husband’s passing and she teared up too. I had told myself many times before I saw her, ‘DON’T CRY!,’ but somehow she just has the ability to make everyone feel very comfortable with her and you want to share with her all your life stories.

This is a short video we did when we were at our lunch. She is just such a happy person to be around.

Of course we talked about fashion, Stacy even checked out our blogs and told us how much she loved our work. How amazing is it when your fashion idol tells you face to face that they enjoy what you do? I felt like I was in my own little heaven. 😉 We were talking about pretty much everything, just like we were hanging out with a fun and loving girlfriend. She also gave Inez from Style Chic 360 a lot of health tips as well. Stacy had spine surgery at end of last year and she is still wearing a brace on her lower back. Later when we were at the Meijer store, she was non-stop working. Look at the photo below, for a person who is still recovering from spine surgery, she worked very hard and really gave 110% effort. I have to say, I really admire and respect her dedication.

Meijer is always my go to grocery shopping destination. They have very fresh produce compared to others in my area. I am so glad my favored supermarket paired up with my style idol to give women a place for fashion as well. That afternoon, Stacy, Inez and myself spent at least 3 hours at the Warren Meijer store. Stacy gave us a tour with the newest Massini line at Meijer and picked up some super cute pieces for us to try. I felt like I was living in my dream! Honestly, many years ago I was dreaming about going on her show and getting a makeover. 😉 She is such a patient teacher and passionate stylist. She answered all the questions on the Meijer Instagram account and then she took us shopping in the Massini line. I did a few Facebook Live videos that day. The first one was her answering questions.

We had so much fun that afternoon. Stacy is so knowledgeable and professional but still so fun to hang out with. Look at all the goofy moments we had.

Now you can see with your own eyes! Stacy London is so REAL and down to the earth. She didn’t mind taking millions of photos with us. 😉 I asked her if she would like to preview the photos I took with her that I was going to use in my blog. She just said “I don’t care how I look, just make sure you look good” That is some real confidence for a female celebrity. I just loved her even more! I am so glad that Meijer brought Stacy on board with their Massini line. Aren’t the clothes I am holding in the photo below just super cute! You need to come back next Wednesday to see more details about the outfit that Stacy picked for me.
