Giving Fashion a Purpose – Breaking Barriers

Giving Fashion a Purpose – Breaking Barriers

There are so many barriers in our lives. The cultural barriers, the language barriers, the final barriers…There are a lot of times those barriers make our lives very difficult. Personally, the language barrier has been my biggest struggle since I moved to America. People used to tease me about my accent. One of my former co-workers asked me what city I live in, I told him Troy. This word gives me so much trouble because I can’t say it very clearly. So he laughed very hard and said “oh, you live in a tree.” Some people will speak to me very slow and loud because they think that way I can understand what they are saying. Some of them just stopped talking to me because they don’t understand what I am saying.

Did you see? I feel the pain and really want to break the barriers. So when my friend Hoda asked me if I would like to be a part of her fashion event of Breaking Barriers, I said yes. Who is Hoda? To say it simply, she is a beautiful young Peace Promoter, Fashion Stylist, Journalist and Beauty Enthusiast. She loves using fashion as a tool to serve the purpose of promoting Peace.

Watch this video to understand what exactly she wanted to say to the world through fashion.

Now you all know, Hoda wanted to reinforce the idea of stepping outside of one’s comfort zone, and defying stereotypes. It is not a matter our skin color, religion or cultural background, we are all human, right? It is all about unity and freedom!

Below are some of the photos from this photo shoot. Just in case you have difficult finding me, I am the Chinese women who wore a burgundy turban. Did you get it? All of our looks are breaking the cultural barrier by wearing things outside of the perceived “norm.” πŸ˜‰

Later on after our photo shoot, Hoda’s effort got noticed by our local TV station WDIV Local 4 / ClickOnDetroit and she was on the news to promote her Breaking Barriers fashion show to benefit Syrian refugees. She and her husband are planing to attend the Syrian Refugee Cross Cultural Solutions Program in Greece to help out the locals. You can watch this short video for more info about the trip and help them to make it happen.

19th Annual Women Helping Women Luncheon and Fashion Show

19th Annual Women Helping Women Luncheon and Fashion Show

Saturday, May 6, I was invited to the 19th Annual Women Helping Women Luncheon and Fashion Show hosted by the Grace Centers of Hope at the beautiful Royal Park Hotel in Rochester, Michigan.

19th Annual Women Helping Women Luncheon and Fashion Show

The fashion show luncheon benefits the Women’s programs at Grace Centers of Hope, one of the largest homeless and rehabilitation centers in southeast Michigan. The fashion show featured women in the program alongside professional models to showcase spring fashions.

Grace Centers of Hope allows addicted and abused individuals to live in a safe community with boundaries, accountability, life skills classes, and counseling. I really like the One Year Life Skills Program for all the local women who needs their life back. I am never a big fan of just donating money to those is in need. I believe giving them the ability to be independent is the real salvation.

You can watch this FB live for the beginning of the show hosted by TV20 host Ann Marie LaFlamme.

I have to say, this is such a powerful event which showcases the women & children of Grace Centers of Hope and their amazing journey through this program. When fashion has a purpose, it becomes so much more meaningful. Here is another short FB live story by one of the women who is in this program.

Ok, now let’s talk about the fabulous fashion show. This high fashion event featured top designers from Michigan, Bonnie Foley, creator of Christian LaRue, Katerina Bocci who just launched her bridal collection and Cynthia LaMaid who has dressed the stars like Jennifer Aniston and Lenny Kravitz. I have been to a lot of luncheons and fashion shows, I have to say this is one of the most organized and high quality shows. Everything is on time and efficient.
