Two weekends ago we were at the small German town of Frankenmuth, Michigan celebrating one of my family members’ birthday.

I call myself “The backyard model” because I was pretty shy when I was taking the photos. When other people look at me, I will feel very uncomfortable when taking a picture. I haven’t found any reasons yet but I am working on it. I started getting better when we were in Cancun last month but my progress is pretty slow.

I love the real street background and the photos turned out pretty good too. Now I am thinking I may need to go out to take more pictures. How often do you take photos? Are you camera shy like me? How do you overcome this issue? I would love to hear from you. Just simply leave your comments below or shoot me an email at gracel@colorandgrace.com.

Get back on the road!

Here we were, half way on our drive from my in-laws home in northern Michigan to our house in the Detroit area. I was behind the wheel on this Sunday afternoon because my husband/driving teacher decided to get such a bad nose bleed the day before that we had to go to the local hospital emergency room! The doctor put a big balloon up his nose to stop the bleeding and then told us that he should probably not drive for a couple days. This was NOT good news for me. I drove a bit on the trip to their home on Friday night and had some excitement from getting my first experience driving at 70 miles per hour and also my first time driving in snow! After that, I was looking forward to a relaxing weekend and ride home as a passenger. I found more and more often that I really shouldn’t count on sticking to my plans! So anyway we had taken a different direction on the trip home to stay away from the heavier traffic that usually was around the bigger cities. We were going through the city of Mount Pleasant and the freeway in this area had some pretty sharp curves. Too sharp for me at least! I went into the worst one at the 70mph speed limit but this just seemed too fast for me to stay on the road. So I didn’t! I wound up going onto the side lane they call the shoulder.

This lane is usually only for an emergency like if your car breaks down or maybe the police want to talk to you. The other thing that often happened in this lane is that any parts that fall off a car or truck may end up here. That’s what I saw in front of me as I was going around this curve too fast. A large piece of something that looked hard! I for sure didn’t want to hit that so hit my brakes to slow down and then quickly turned the steering wheel to get back into the lane. And then through the lane and into the fast lane! I yelled and my husband yelled. Then more yelling! A car was almost next to me but had seen me coming over so slowed down! By now we were on another curve going the other way! What the heck were these road builders thinking? I tried to get back over but wound up going off the other side of the road onto the left shoulder! By now, I was finally slowing down but I was also causing a bit of concern with the other drivers who did manage to stay in their lanes. Now there was more yelling but not all from inside the car. Some of those drivers were also waving at me with special hand signals. And they were testing the horns on their cars. That was just what I needed, more things to make me nervous.

This was when my “driving teacher” gave me the advice to maybe slow down BEFORE I get to the curve next time. If he hadn’t had a balloon stuck in his nose I think I would have punched him there! Probably the only thing that saved him was the fact that I was grabbing the steering wheel so hard that it took me several minutes to relax my hands enough to let go! Anyway, by now I was both slowed down a bit and also through the crazy double curve on the freeway. So I was able to get back out of the way of the more experienced drivers and into the slow lane where I belonged! After this small panic, the road became straighter and the lanes wider again. I was very happy to see Mount Pleasant get further and further away in my rearview mirror as we left the city. I couldn’t help but think to myself that whoever named this city “Pleasant” had even less understanding of English than I did. And I was only speaking it for a year by then! Well maybe the city was OK but its freeway was for sure not! But we made it the next 2 hours without any more scary parts and when I pulled into our driveway I took the keys out, handed them to my husband and told him no more lessons for a week! I’ve been driving for several years now but this was still the longest drive I have done at one time. I’m OK if I never break that record! The lessons do continue though so please hop back in and buckle up!

Raise your hands if you love leather! I will raise both of my hands. 😉 I grew up with my older brother. My parents were too busy making a living so my older brother was my babysitter. All my clothes actually were hand-me -down from him too. So I looked like a boy when I was young. I mean even when I was in my high school. I guess that is why I feel I am more like a man sometimes. I am very focused, not dramatic at all. And I am very calm and never give up. Lol, sounds like a very boring guy. But because of this, leather is the best material to represent the tough side of me.

I wear leather all year round. But I don’t like to wear it completely tough or punk. I always like to add some fun or feminine element to the look.

Stay left! Now stay right!

So I was driving on the freeway going back home from my in-laws home. My husband/driving instructor was in what was usually my seat. The one WITHOUT the steering wheel! But he had a good excuse this time. He had a special medical balloon stuck in his nose. He had gotten it the day before at the hospital emergency room after he got a nose bleed that just wouldn’t stop! Part of the problem was probably because the air inside the homes in Michigan in winter was often pretty dry from the heated air that kept us from freezing. Anyway, the doctor had suggested that my husband take a couple days off from driving until he got to his own doctor back home. So even though I had never driven more than 90 minutes in a day, now I was on the Interstate Highway, going 70 miles per hour and about a third of the way on our 200 mile drive! Usually this trip would take about three and a half hours but we were taking a little bit longer route. This was our compromise to my driving experience because it was also a bit calmer drive. There weren’t as many big cities and not as much traffic when we went this direction. It was a bit longer for time but not enough to make a big difference. Luckily the weather was a lot better than when we were driving up to my husband’s parents. I got to drive in my first snow on Friday evening. It was pretty easy to come to the conclusion that it was much better to drive on dry roads! I also was happy that it was daylight. Because we left our house after my husband finished his work on Friday we didn’t even start our trip until almost dinner time.

Anyway, I had driven the hour or so from my in-law’s home to the freeway. We filled up our gas tank just before we got on the crazy fast road so we would have plenty to get us all the way home. In northern Michigan there isn’t usually much traffic; especially during this time of year. In the summer, when people were going “Up North” as they say here, the roads can actually get quite crowded. Michigan is full of lakes, rivers and forests so people love to go fishing, boating, camping and other ways to have fun outside. But this was November. Even though a lot of people still go to northern Michigan to hunt the local deer it isn’t nearly as crowded as the summer season. Of course the further south you went and the closer to Detroit and some of the other cities then that changed and the roads filled up. About half way on our trip was the city of Mount Pleasant. It’s not a very big city but does have one of the state colleges there. It’s the home of Central Michigan University or CMU. As you might guess from the name Mount Pleasant is pretty much in the center of Michigan. It also happens to be an area where a couple of freeways cross.

Usually this isn’t a problem as the exits are pretty well laid out and everything happens in a way that sort of makes sense. I mentioned that I was figuring out some of the tricks of driving and one thing I noticed is that most things happen on the right side of the road. That’s where most of the exits are, and also the entrance ramps. So usually, if you want to change roads or see where new people are coming onto the road, you’re pretty safe looking to the right. It seemed that on this trip I was going to get a LOT of experience with the unusual intersections! As we were coming into the town I was making sure to stay in my lane as I saw an exit coming up that went into the downtown area were the CMU campus was. It seemed that in this part of the city this freeway was pretty old. All of a sudden the lanes became much smaller than before. And then we were on a pretty tight curve! Then to make it even more exciting I saw that some people were coming onto the highway from the left side! I was going the speed limit but this part of the road wasn’t really meant to be going that fast! I tried to keep the car in the narrow lane but suddenly I was off the road and onto the extra side lane they call a shoulder. This lane is usually only for if your car breaks down or maybe if the police are giving you a ticket. There are special grooves on the shoulder they put there to let you know if you’re getting off the road. When your tire hits these they make a loud noise! My husband yelled at me to get back on the road! I yelled back at him that I was trying but we were going too fast for the curve! The really bad part of being on the shoulder is that there is often a lot of junk there from the freeway. Big parts that may have fallen off another car end up here and I could see a large piece of something metal in front of me; and I was going to hit it if I didn’t do something! Please come back to find out what happens next!
