Happy Birthday to Me!

What was your best birthday memory?

Mine was on this day exactly 10 years ago.

In China, most adults don’t really celebrate their birthday until maybe they are more than 60 years old. I was quite surprised at how crazy people in America go for birthdays. Even little kids have huge parties and piles of gifts. When I was growing up, your birthday was pretty much just another day. There were no parties, no cake, no candles and no gifts. The best birthday memory I have from childhood is when my mom cooked two hard boiled eggs for me. For a family that was lacking food, eggs were absolutely the best things that we could imagine. The high school I went to was far from my home so I stayed there in the dorms. It was hard for my family to come visit so I often spent my birthday by myself. Eventually my birthday became a painful day for me. I would have loved my family and friends to remember this special day and do something. But more often than not it was just another day, except with a more disappointing ending than usual. I pretty much learned to not think about this day any more.

But then I met a foreign man who gave me the first real birthday party in my life. We had met about 10 months before and by the time my birthday was getting closer we had become a pretty serious couple. He had heard that I never had a birthday party and decided it was time to change that. The day we met I was with my best friend, so my boyfriend thought he would contact her to try to help with the surprise. As I said, the Chinese didn’t usually make a big deal out of birthdays and we really weren’t all that familiar with the idea of a surprise party. My boyfriend was hoping to get the whole party together at one of our favorite Shanghai restaurants without me knowing anything. But my friend decided that if the party was for me, I should be the first one to know. So she told me! My boyfriend is now my husband and he’s also still a bit mad at my friend; 10 years later! But I didn’t really care about the surprise. I was just so happy that he had tried to do it. He had contacted my friends and some other people that we had met together and arranged for them to all meet for dinner and birthday cake. And I even got a few presents! It really made me feel I was loved and special!

Of course, now that I’ve been in America we always celebrate my birthday. Maybe not with a party but having a nice dinner with my family every year is wonderful! My first birthday here my stepdaughter even secretly baked a birthday cake with my name on it! Nobody had ever done anything like that for me! It really made me feel that I am important to someone. And I’m happy to say that 9 years after his plan failed, my husband finally pulled off the big surprise party he wanted for me on my birthday last year! And that’s just one of the reasons this foreign man became my dear husband. So now when they ask me what’s on my birthday gift list, I can honestly say that I already got everything I want. But, just to make sure I don’t hurt their feelings, I still give them some suggestions!

It’s all downhill from here!

I would guess that most of the people reading this learned how to drive a car when they were teenagers. Probably you went to a driving school and had professional instructors and special cars with warning signs and safety features. I am not most people. I didn’t learn until I was quite a bit out of my teens and my future husband was my teacher. And his little old car was my classroom! For my first time behind the steering wheel we went to the nearby cemetery in our town. This may sound unusual but in fact it was a pretty good place to learn. Our town has a lake and this cemetery has a lot of shoreline on the lake. It’s treated almost like a park. During the nice weather you can see lots of people walking, riding bikes and standing along the shore with fishing poles and chairs. It has a lot of quiet smooth roads and of course not much traffic so it seemed like a good place for my first driving lesson. And it was going OK. Our car had a manual transmission so that gave me some extra trouble while learning. Having to operate an extra pedal with my foot, while moving the gear shift with my hand, was definitely one more thing to worry about than I needed. But this was the only car we had so off we went.

After a little bit shaky start, I finally got the car moving and was starting to get the hang of how to make it do what I wanted. Turning left and right, starting and stopping, slowing down and speeding up, checking my mirrors and trying to keep on the narrow roadways was keeping me busy. As you might guess the speed limit in the cemetery was very slow. And that was fine with me. The slower the better until I got more experienced sounded like a good idea. I don’t think I even got the car out of first gear on that day. That also sounded right. First gear for my first lesson; second gear could wait! After a while we decided that I had done enough for my first day so we started to make our way out to the entrance. My husband thought it would be a good idea to drive out along the road that went next to the lakeshore. That was part of a circle route that was one way only so I didn’t have to worry about cars coming the other way and it was wider than a lot of the other roads so it made sense to me too.

The funny thing about a lake is that all the land around it goes uphill. So that means that when you are going towards the lake you are likely going downhill. Now one thing I hadn’t done yet was go downhill in a car that I was controlling. So there we were driving slowly along when my fiancé/driving teacher told me to turn on a road I hadn’t been on yet. We went through a break in the trees and there directly in front of and below me was the lake. I know I had walked on this road before but now with me sitting behind a steering wheel and seeing it through the windshield for the first time it seemed like I was driving off a cliff and into the water! At the bottom of the hill was a sharp right turn to get us on the road that went next to the lake but I had no doubt in my mind that I would not make that turn! As the front wheels went over the top of the hill the car started to speed up. What the heck? I wasn’t even touching the gas pedal. What my soon to be ex-future husband/ex-driving teacher had thought was a great idea was soon going to kill us both! And in a cemetery! That was it! I put my foot all the way down on the brake pedal and stopped the car. I turned off the key, took off my seatbelt, got out of the car and then finally started to breathe again. Needless to say, the day’s lesson was over. Looking back, I still can’t believe he thought it was a good idea to take me on that hill. Of course he wasn’t trying to be mean, or scare me. He had been driving for so many years he just didn’t realize how scary something like that could be to someone without a similar background. Anyway, we made it back home and I even started talking to him later that evening! Oh, and the lessons continue! Please come back and ride along!
