How to feature a soft pink coat

Say ya to da fashion!

For the first several years after moving to America we would make the long drive to the far far north every winter to visit my stepson. He was attending Michigan Tech University in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. His birthday is in February and we always liked to celebrate with him. The U.P. as its known was settled by people of Scandinavian heritage and has its own language, customs and food. This part of the country is pretty wild and rugged and as you’d expect they get tons of snow! Some of these trips were pretty scary when you couldn’t even see the road. My husband would usually do the driving but that didn’t mean I could relax in the passenger seat. I was the lookout for deer, blowing snow drifts and crazy logging truck drivers! These guys were so used to driving on the snow covered roads that they didn’t even slow down. The best plan was to get behind one of these trucks and just try to keep up! As beautiful as it is in this Winter Wonderland I was very happy when he got his degree and moved back down south to a bit more reasonable winters!

If you’re just reading my blog for the first time, what’s been taking you so long? Joking! But I do want to welcome you. This week I’m featuring outfits that are go to for going out in the winter weather. For this outfit of the day I started with this soft pink coat. I’ve long outgrown the age where I like to play princess and sometimes this light pink color can come off as a bit too youthful. Not that I look or dress old but no mature woman wants to be treated like a teenager. So to toughen up the softness I covered the pink with a ferocious leopard pattern oversized scarf. This print is spot on and even features the leopard face while it gets right into your face with a bit of sophisticated attitude.

My knee high brown leather boots keep my legs warm and dry and echo from the brown color palate of the feature scarf. The scarf was hard to compete with so why try? I used crisp clean whites to layer under the pink outerwear. White skinny jeans and a soft ivory sweater kept this outfit on the right path. I always like to have that so important 3rd color to make a splash and today went with bright vibrant blue. The neon blue band on my black wool hat almost glows and is the perfect segue to the velvety smooth small bag. My cool white sunnies keep me from being blinded by the bright bling of the metal accents on the purse while putting the icing on the pretty pink coat.

How to feature a blue wool coat

Wearing the blues!

One thing that was pretty strange for me when I came to America from China was all the fuss over the college sports teams. In China the universities are just something you had to get through so that you could start making money! There they were more just a path in your life instead of a destination. I must admit that I find the college loyalty and pride that I see here and sort of feel like I missed out a bit. Although on the up side, you never got in trouble by cheering for the wrong team! Here in Michigan you really only have two choices. You either pull for the Green and White Spartans of Michigan State University or you’re a Wolverine fan and wear the Maize and Blue of the University of Michigan. I have family members from both camps so have to be diplomatic when it comes to the big game or when I’m putting together an outfit. When my stepdaughter looks at today’s outfit, she won’t be seeing the electric blue and pop of bright beautiful yellow. No, instead, this proud Spartan alumnus will only see the colors of her life long enemy! Oh well, beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder!

The color blue always seems to flatter me well. So when I found this rich and warm bright blue wool coat I knew I had the key to a great outfit. It’s really hard to beat wool for a winter coat. It cuts the wind and comes in such a rainbow of colors that you are never at a loss for choices. And if you happen to ever get really wet it’s one of the few fabrics that will still keep you warm! I found this modern take on the traditional pea coat at the end of last season and it’s been waiting patiently in my closet ready to pounce on a winter day.

I didn’t want the coat to feel lonely in its pouncing so backed it up with my trendy leopard pattern soft wool hat and my unbelievably useful leather and leopard booties. The vibrant blue is very rich but you know what they say, “you can never be too rich or too thin”. So I went ahead and added a rich hoard of bright yellow accents. The toasty warm infinity scarf and small clutch bag with shiny chain strap and edge bling really set the stage. With all this outer color I kept the inside on a steady keel with a cashmere sweater and my go to leather skinnies in basic but never boring black. I’ve said before that drawing from a three color palette is a key method for putting together a winning outfit. I think you’ll agree that today’s look is a sure lock!
