I wore this outfit two weeks ago on a day trip to the city of Port Huron, Michigan. For my Christmas present last year, my step-daughter gave me some admission tickets for 4 museums there. As you may have guessed from the name, Port Huron is next to Lake Huron, so we figured we’d better use them while the weather is still not too cold to be near the water. One of the museums is on a boat and another is a lighthouse so they were definitely summertime destinations. Unfortunately the weather that day felt much more like autumn than August. But that’s often the way it is this time of year in this part of the world. The kids (and teachers) are back in school and fall is coming fast. So we may as well start to think about how to dress for the season.

I’ve always wondered why that season is the only one with two names. Some people call it fall and others call it autumn. Both are correct and either can be used. But why not other seasons? I mean spring is my favorite. It’s when things come back to life. We start to see green again in Michigan. So why not an alternate name for spring? How about blossomer? Or greenup? Or for summer we could also call it hotumn? Actually in Michigan we do have several other names we call winter but I can’t really say them. This IS a family blog you know! Fall or autumn offers a lot of outdoor things to do in Michigan, so today I decided to focus on fall casual chic looks.

Tired of dressing up? Just pick a comfy men’s sweater, pair it with an edgy leather skirt, also add a cool oversized clutch, you are ready to go for a fall brunch with your crew.

New York Trip Recap

New York Trip Recap

Dim sum. That’s what was on my mind as I woke up for our first full day in NYC. And where better to get it than in Chinatown? So that was our first destination. We asked the hotel concierge how the subway worked and went to try it out. We found the station no problem. Went down the stairs to the ticket window, bought our passes, made our way through the turnstiles and onto the platform. The wrong platform. No problem, I’m sure we can just go up some stairs and across to the one with the trains going the direction we wanted to go. Look to the left. No stairs. Right. No stairs. Ask the guy waiting to get on the train that takes you far away from Chinatown. Nope. No stairs. Sooooo…basically we just paid about $6 to stand on the wrong platform for a few minutes. Well, THIS was a good start to the day! Out the exit and up to street level. Cross the street and back down again. OK. We got this. Just a little learning curve going on. Nothing to see here. Move along. After that we decided to measure twice, cut once so to speak. My husband had a map and we had Siri working overtime as we found our stop and started the several block walk from the station to the dim sum. That was one of the pleasant surprises from our time in Manhattan was how walkable the city is. After a 20 minute stroll to help work up our appetite we found our destination. I was pumped. In addition to the dim sum they specialized in Shanghai style food. We’d found some pretty good Chinese restaurants near our home but none were Shanghainese. Having lived in that area for my last decade in China I was missing their particular style of comfort food. Noodles, veggies and the mandatory soup dumplings called xiaolongbao filled out the more traditional Cantonese dim sum steam baskets of sesame balls and pork ribs.

After getting our strength back we hit the road again for a look at the Brooklyn Bridge. Meh. Yup. Definitely a bridge going on there. OK, I guess I’ve seen it on TV or in a movie or two but bridges do look pretty similar. You know, begin and end on land, water under the middle. OK, NEXT! Walking along the East River towards the Staten Island Ferry. Sniff. Sniff. What is that? Sniff. SNIFF! There’s a clothing sale nearby. SNNIIIFFFF! THERE! A cool little side street with some neat shops and sure enough, a sale! You know how they say one identical twin can sense when the other is in pain? I can sense a nearby sale on trendy clothes. I don’t like to brag but it’s kind of my superpower! I could tell my husband was getting tired from the walking so I decided to shop for a while to give him a break. He was able to sit on the couch and study his map while I tried on pretty much the whole clearance rack. Besides I knew he’d be loaded down with my new finds for the rest of the day so wanted him to conserve his energy. The things I do for love! About an hour later, he put on his backpack, now straining at the seams and we went down to the ferry terminal. The Staten Island Ferry is one of those little known treasures that everybody knows about. But the really excellent thing about it is it’s FREE! As in no charge. You just walk on and sit down. The other really excellent thing about it is you get pretty close to the Statue of Liberty as the boat heads south towards Staten Island. We wanted to see the green lady but didn’t really want to devote the half day or more that it would take to do the tour. Our time was limited and you never know when I might smell another detour! So we took the ferry to the end, got off, and walked around for a few minutes. We quickly decided that was enough of that and hopped back on the next boat to Manhattan. The view of the skyline as you head back is unbelievable. Definitely one of the best free things to do in NYC, or anywhere.

On our way back towards our hotel we made sure I could walk along one of the main sights I had on my list; Wall Street. As a Chinese native I have a large appreciation of all things money related. Walking on Wall Street is sort of a pilgrimage for us financial fans. We even walked the extra few blocks to take a look at the famous Bull statue. From here we were pretty close to what is now solemnly known as Ground Zero. I’m not a natural born American and had never even been to this country until several years after that terrible day. I don’t know anyone personally who was affected but I found I was still getting pretty emotional just thinking about it. So I didn’t. Instead we turned around and started making our way back when I walked face first into what would become my new favorite department store! The Century 21 store had like 7 floors of discount designer clothes, shoes, bags and accessories. I was instantly feeling better and settled in for another retail therapy session. My husband was quick to point out that his backpack hadn’t gotten any emptier as the day went on but I reminded him that he still had 2 empty hands and I’d be happy to help. I could carry his wallet for example. He lucked out though and we escaped without my buying anything. The only pieces I really liked were still out of my price range even on clearance. Oh well, maybe next time. I had shopped up quite a hunger now so the next thing on our schedule was dinner. As it happened we were pretty near Chinatown again about then but we had Italian on our mind. And strangely, in New York, China is right next door to Italy. At least that’s the layout of Little Italy and Chinatown. We sat down at an outdoor table, sipped some house red and ate pasta and risotto. Another successful dinner finished, we made our way back to the subway (yes, going the right way) and to our hotel. What a day! Come back to my blog to see what the morning brings!
