20th Annual Women Helping Women Luncheon and Fashion Show

On Saturday, April 21st, I was invited to the 20th Annual Women Helping Women Luncheon and Fashion Show hosted by the Grace Centers of Hope at the beautiful Royal Park Hotel in Rochester, Michigan.

This is my second year attending this beautifully presented and super emotional event. You can see more about last year’s event here. This fashion show and luncheon benefit the Women’s programs at Grace Centers of Hope, one of the largest homeless and rehabilitation centers in southeast Michigan. The fashion show featured women in the program, alongside professional models, to showcase spring fashions and talented Michigan designers.

When fashion finds a higher purpose, by giving people hope and real help, it becomes more meaningful and heartwarming. I knew I would cry based on last year’s experience, but oh boy, I may have cried more than I planned. After losing my late husband, I feel like I understand others pain more easily. I felt my pain was really not a big deal after I heard about all of the tough times those women, and their loved ones, had to go through. Watch my FB live below to see why this event is so touching and powerful.

I am also so relieved to know that at least these women have a place to go if they decide to get help and get their life back again. The thing I like about the Women’s programs at Grace Centers of Hope, is they don’t just cut a check and give it to the woman or her family. Grace Centers of Hope allows addicted and abused individuals to live in a safe community with boundaries, accountability, life skills classes, and counseling. I really like the One Year Life Skills Program for all local women who need their life back. I am never a big fan of just donating money to those in need. I believe giving them the ability to be independent is the real salvation. Anyway, you can watch this 60 second video to see some highlights from this fashion show in action.

Below are some of my favorite looks from the show. The first part features all the women who have gone through this program and made big come backs in their lives. Those confident smiles just melt my heart.

Amy and my hat in the photo below are both from the same Michigan brand by Rachelle. I wore this same hat to this event last year and had received so many compliments!

You probably already have seen the super dreamy wedding gowns. They are from another amazing Michigan designer, Katerina Bocci. Anyway, I have already talked to Grace Centers of Hope to see if there are more ways that I can be helpful. I hope you can make your way to their website and check them out.

Look For Less To Support The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC)

There is a special personal connection between me and the Salvation Army. Back when I just moved to America, my late husband and I were pretty tight on money, so yard sales and the Salvation Army were the two major resources for us, especially after he was laid off not long after. Now you know why the Salvation Army has a very special place in my heart. 🙂

Are you a Salvation Army shopper? I am! Top fashion doesn’t have to mean top dollar — everyone wants the look for less! Last month, I went to the local Salvation Army store in Rochester Hills, Michigan and had so much fun treasure hunting!

More spring colors.

Oh the timeless polka dot!

At this location, they even have a boutique section!

Everyday they have a certain color tag to indicate items that are on a discount. Every Friday they have this super great deal where you can spend $10 and get 10 pieces of clothing. 😉 Take a look at these two outfits I got from them. Can you guess how much I paid for each piece?

So, what is your guess for those 3 pieces? Well, here is the answer. The Zara top was $3.99, WHBM red pants were $5.99 and the dress was $18.99. How crazy! Many people don’t realize that in addition to unique vintage items, the stores are packed with new merchandise too — a lot of times the original tags are still on them! See below:

I have to tell you, the best one in Michigan has to be the one in Rochester Hills. With the high end communities surrounding it, I often find really good brands. One time I found a Prada top! Unfortunately it was way too big so I didn’t buy it. One time there was an Armani Lace vest. The trip I just took last month was when I found this Missoni dress. Again, it was just too big on me.

Ok, enough about fashion, let’s talk about a serious topic. 😉 The ARC (The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center) operates 37 thrift stores across southeast Michigan, including the one I go to, from which all proceeds benefit the ARC’s 180-day residential adult rehabilitation center for men and women struggling with substance abuse. I know a few people in my life that have suffered from this.

Without the support of a comprehensive rehabilitation program there is a lesser chance of recovery and a greater risk of relapse. That’s where The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) can help.

Full recovery from substance abuse goes beyond traditional detox treatment. You need individualized emotional, social and spiritual assistance to maintain a strong and healthy path on the road to recovery – and all of that takes time. At the ARC, they give you the time you need to self-reflect, work on self-defeating habits and behaviors and truly heal so relapse can be avoided. They can help you rebuild your life through a residential, self-help program that can run 180 to 365 days, depending on your personal progress. Their 12-step, abstinence-based approach is designed to help you learn how to stay clean.

Sobriety is a lifelong commitment! As you can see, the ARC is a significant stop on the road to recovery! Through other Salvation Army programs, as well as partnerships with a variety of housing, job placement, relapse prevention and other community organizations, they can help ensure your successful return to independent living.

So you see, shopping at ARC stores is not just getting amazing fashion for less, but also contributes to a great cause helping others return to a healthy and clean life. Now I am teaming up with the ARC to give one lucky winner a $50 gift card to shop at any of their 37 stores in Southeast Michigan. All you need to do is leave a comment below. 🙂
