MADDMAN: The Steve Madden Story

MADDMAN: The Steve Madden Story

A few weeks ago I received an email asking me if I would like to meet Steve Madden and interview him during the world premier of his documentary film in Michigan. I was like, heck YES! I love Steve Madden shoes and I loved to get the chance to know more about the person behind this popular brand. Then I suddenly realized, I knew nothing about him.

MADDMAN: The Steve Madden Story

Who is the iconic shoe designer, really? At the beginning of the film, there are a lot of people trying to figure out who he is. “I didn’t even think Steve Madden was a real guy,” one bystander says in the film, obtained exclusively by The Wrap. “I just thought it was a brand.” “I know he was in that movie, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’” said another.

I had no clue about the movie nor him. So I spent a few days doing research on him. I found out he is a man with so many interesting stories behind him. He went from stock boy at a shoe store to global powerhouse, addict to sober, prison to redemption, he has always bounced back. Steve Madden’s life epitomizes the triumphs and trapdoors of pursuing the American Dream. During the researching process, I came across a short video captured of him working at his company. He told a young girl that if she wore a specific pair of shoes again to work, she would be fired. I was like, holy moly, what a bossy guy!

I was a little bit nervous about the interview. What if he gave me a hard time? I better ask some smart questions! I figured all the questions about fashion probably had already been asked millions of times, so I decided to focus on life. I also created this red-carpet look around this pair of white Steve Madden boots. It is just my way to show some respect. 😉

MADDMAN: The Steve Madden Story premiered at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11 at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. You can watch this short FB live story from my interview with Steve Madden on the red carpet before the film.

It turned out he was pretty nice as you can see. The director, Ben Patterson, did a great job telling us who Steve Madden really is. The film provides intimate access to Madden as it explores how he repeatedly nearly destroyed his life through drugs, alcohol, and through a single-minded determination to build his business no matter what the cost to his personal life, and even to his freedom. Throughout it all, Madden has maintained an uncanny charm, clever wit, endless creativity. After watching the whole film (You can watch it on iTunes on the release day, December 1.) I have to say, he just got another loyal fan. Beneath the fame and the fortune is a flawed man coming to terms with the sacrifices he made to build his empire.

Below is a recording of the Q & A session after the film just in case you want to know him more. It is quite long, but worth the watch. 😉

Everyone knows the name Steve Madden, but most don’t know the man behind the eponymous shoe brand. “Certainly, we had a lot of obstacles, I made some terrible mistakes,” Madden said. “We overcame them personally and professionally, that’s the story I want to share and hopefully some young kids will be inspired by it, perhaps.” I have to say, his personality must be super, because even after many huge ups and downs in his life, most of his friends, employees and even his ex wife are still in his life and saying very nice things about him.

MADDMAN: The Steve Madden Story, is a film definitely deserving of being put on your watch list.

Happy 4th of July! I know it is a red, white and blue kind of day. But I decided to do something a little differently. I love my new country very much. After all, I am an American citizen for several years now and often get emotional when I hear the Star Spangled Banner to start off a game or other event. So I decided to support some more of our local homegrown talents to honor this special day. 🙂

Last Thursday evening we were invited to this PARKVIEW Magazine One-year Anniversary Event‏. Honestly, I was not sure what to expect. But when I walked into this beautiful Brooklyn Outdoor Loft in Detroit’s Eastern Market district, I instantly felt like I was in some trendy little corner of NYC. I mean I am regularly pleasantly surprised by some new experience or place I never knew about tucked away around the “D”! It’s always like I discovered some secret treasure when I find it. Of course, as often as not, everyone else already knows about it and is wondering where I’ve been!

PARK VIEW MAGAZINE is a lifestyle publication with a collection of life’s allure through a showcase of awesome people, unique places, shared spaces, and the experiences that influence culture. They capture how individual taste is cultivated through living and common spaces and how people are making their mark in the world while fulfilling their passion and purpose. It is quite a unique approach for a magazine.

PARK VIEW MAGAZINE

PARKVIEW MAGAZINE is a reference for inspiration and cunning perspective from some of the most intriguing human beings around. Not so much of a keeping up with the trends type of read, but more of a visual and reading experience that embraces and inspires a lifestyle. I am very proud to see that there is such a high quality magazine in the Detroit area.

What can beat a great chef that prepares food at the party? Love, love, loved those short rib sliders and cheesy grits and shrimp (one of my personal faves!) from Chef Jeremy Kalmus.

I’m sure you have heard a lot of stories about Detroit. And not the kind that make you want to visit. You need to see that, like most stories, there’s a different side of this city. There are so many talented people here that are giving their all to create the new image of the D. You can read more on PARK VIEW Magazine. And there are so many cool and trendy parts of this city just waiting for you to discover!
