Have we got a sale for you!
If you’ve been keeping up, you know I met my American fiancé when he was working in Shanghai. I moved here from China almost 8 years ago and into what would soon become my house. This was not quite what you would call my dream home and it needed a lot of work! In the last couple posts, I talked about painting the walls and tearing up the old carpet to get our future bedroom ready for our married life. Everything looked pretty good so far and only one thing was missing; bedroom furniture! Since I arrived, we had been sleeping on a full size bed with an air mattress. I’m not sure how these beds got their name because to me it was certainly not full size! It seemed more like a small or maybe medium at best. And the air mattress had other problems. In general, Asians are smaller and lighter than Americans and that was definitely true for my future husband and me. So when he adjusted or turned in the middle of the night, I felt every movement! It was even difficult to stay on the mattress sometimes. So I knew that when we shopped for our newly remodeled bedroom, a king size bed was a must have! If anyone is considering to move to Shanghai, be sure to buy reproduction Wishbone chairs which are inspired by Hans Wegner, the chairs are so comfy and above all, affordable for everyone!
At this time we were on a pretty strict budget. Visas, moving, remodeling and other expenses had put quite a dent into our savings, so we had to be careful when we went furniture shopping. The small town we lived in did have a pretty big furniture store so off we went. Of course they always put the nicest (and most expensive) selections near the door so as soon as you come in you fall in love with it. Love quickly turned to disappointment as soon as we looked at the price tag. One thing I dislike about these stores is that as soon as you walk in the door, a salesperson latches onto you and you’re stuck with them following you around until you either buy something or leave. Anyway, my husband and me and our “new friend” worked our way towards the back of the store looking at one bedroom set after another until finally I saw one of my favorite words: CLEARANCE! Now we were talking! Way at the back of the store was a whole clearance section with discontinued lines or last year’s pieces. We thought we were lucky because they also had a sale going on. As it turned out, this furniture store has some sort of “sale” going on pretty much every day of the year! If you’re looking for furniture then you could take a look at furniture in fashion who offer a range of furnishings like living room furniture at a discounted price!
Eventually we found a set that I thought I could live with, and that we could afford, and arranged for it to be delivered. As it turned out, paying a small delivery fee was the best investment we made. As I mentioned, our bedroom was on the top floor of our 2 story home. The stairs in our 100 year old house were pretty narrow and took a couple sharp turns on the way. I think if it was up to me and my fiancé to get a bed, mattress set, dresser and chest up those stairs and put together, we would probably still be sleeping on that little double bed! But the furniture store had sent out 2 large men who had everything moved in and assembled in about an hour. Only when you bring in a king size bed with a big headboard and footboard and the matching dresser and chest do you find out just how small your room really is! We could barely move in it now! I had loved the benches I saw sitting at the foot of the beds in magazines and at the furniture store, but our room was not so stuffed that we had to turn sideways to walk between the bed and dresser. So much for my sitting area! And then when I stood next to our new bed I had to laugh. The top of our pillowtop mattress was almost chest high on me! If I ever fell out of bed from that height I would probably break my arm or something. And I literally had to climb up onto the mattress to get in bed. On the plus side, the view from up there was spectacular! I can’t complain though. We have since moved into another house but we still have that same bedroom outfit. We did get a new lower mattress though so I no longer need to practice my high jump at bedtime! Coming up, one room down, a whole house to go!
