What are the Must-Have Items for an Edgy, Rocker-Chic Wardrobe? A leather skinny definitely is at the top of this list. Rocker-chic wardrobes are sexy, free, tough, and just a little unexpected. But if you have been following me for a while you may know that I love the fine line between cool and classy. So today I am going to twist the tough look a little bit and add more elegance to it.
My driving story continues:
Color and Grace meets Colored Lights
If you’ve been reading my posts you know that after I moved to America from China one of the many cultural adjustments I had to make was learning to drive a car. I had comfortably gotten through my whole life in China without this skill and until about 8 years ago thought I would never have to learn it. But here I was, in our little car with my future husband sitting next to me. You don’t need a certified teacher in Michigan if you are already an adult to learn to operate a car. It just has to be someone who already had a driver’s license. My husband did, and he had taught others how to drive his car with a manual shifter so he figured he could teach me too. Sometimes my husband makes good decisions. He did marry me after all. And sometimes he doesn’t. Having survived being taught driving by the person you plan to spend the rest of your life with, I can honestly say I don’t recommend it. This kind of activity comes with a lot of stress filled moments. It can be just plain scary learning to operate a machine that is capable of going really fast and hurting or killing not only you but others as well. Any time there’s a lot of stress there’s also a lot of emotion. We’d already had a few somewhat heated “discussions”. Not being a native English speaker probably added to my nervousness.
Things can happen fast when you’re behind the steering wheel and it helps to be able to understand the warnings being yelled at you! My husband and I actually have a great relationship. It’s rare that we have an argument and I’m pretty proud of that. One area we do see, or actually hear things differently is when he is giving me “suggestions” in tense moments. He usually thinks his voice is low and he isn’t yelling. He is wrong. I know yelling. I don’t like yelling. And I’m an expert. Native Mandarin speakers know how the meaning of a similar sounding word can change dramatically depending on the tone used. The same word with an upward lifting tone is completely different than one with a falling tone; and is different again from one with a steady flat tone. I can tell the difference. We Chinese have the ear for it. So I am able to detect when my husband is yelling at me, even if he doesn’t say a word. Like I said, I’m an expert. Most wives are.
Anyway, I had just pulled onto our town’s main road for the first time. As with most small towns in America our downtown was an intersection between two main streets, one running north and south and one going east and west. I was now heading west on the bigger of the two. There was a traffic light where these streets crossed and also one block away in three of the four directions. This pretty much defined the downtown business district. In between these traffic lights were restaurants, shops, a movie theater, banks, churches, our library and people! Not just people, but silly people who actually thought it would be alright to cross the street IN FRONT OF MY CAR!!! Yup, there they were. In fact, people were everywhere; on the sidewalks on both sides of the road. And in front of me was a bright red light. This meant it was time for the people who wanted to get from one side of the road to the other to cross over. There was even a light telling them it was a good idea to walk in front of me. What were they thinking? OK, I can do this. I was slowing down to stop at the light. Right foot on the brake. Left foot on the clutch. Slow…slow…stop. Hey. That wasn’t so hard. I looked back up at the red light. Wait a minute. It wasn’t red. It was green. Look in the mirror. Where did THAT car come from? You’ve GOT to be kidding! Shift into first gear, no pressure, look in mirror, not just one car behind me, lots of cars! Maybe a little pressure. Let out the clutch, and…stall…of course. Why wouldn’t you? Please ride along in my next post!
