This was a day of “firsts”. My first time driving on an Interstate Highway or “freeway”; My first time almost being crushed by a huge truck; My first time going 70 miles per hour and even a bit faster when I had to get out of the way; AND now my first time driving in snow! Oh, and not just snow, but snow and dark. And the crazy thing was I had only been driving for about an hour! Some hours are definitely longer than others! There wasn’t much snow on the ground thank goodness. That would come soon enough as the winters in northern Michigan were known for lots of the cold white stuff. But it started coming down a bit heavier as I drove along. Where my in-laws lived was not too far from Lake Michigan. This was one of the 5 huge “Great Lakes” and was big enough to affect the weather nearby. It added water into the air which meant that it often snowed more than areas only a few miles behind me. The roads were still clear and I could see the lines telling me where the side of the road ended and the dirt and gravel “shoulder” began. I also saw the line in the middle of the road. This line of white paint was the only thing keeping those cars going the other direction at 55 miles per hour on their side of the road. I actually sort of missed the freeway now! There people were going faster and there were more lanes but everyone near me was at least going the same direction. The cars going the other way were far away and we were separated by trees and grass and a lot of room.

Now, with the snow coming down it was making it a bit difficult to see sometimes. And when a car would go by me the other direction the wind he made would throw more snow and water onto my windshield. I’d done a bit of night time driving around our home. Usually out in the long straight roads that went through the farmland just outside our small town. These roads didn’t usually get much traffic so when it got dark I was able to turn on our car’s high beam headlights. You could see a very long way when these were on and they lit up the road quite nicely. When a car would come towards me, I had to turn them off because they were so bright you would pretty much blind the other drivers. Once the line of cars coming the other way passed me I thought these high beams would be just the thing so I pushed on the hand lever that turned them on. All I could see in front of me was a wall of moving white! What the HECK was going on? Well my husband explained that when it’s snowing and you turn these bright lights on they reflect off the snow flakes and pretty much come back at you and all you see is the snow directly in front of your car. Instead of helping you see further down the road they make it so you can’t see at all! All I could think of is what other “surprises” did I not know about? So I quickly turned the high beams off and grabbed the steering wheel a bit tighter. We only had probably another 15 minutes to go. At least that would be how long at the normal speed. But by now the snow was actually starting to stick to the road so my new normal speed was a lot slower than usual.

Of course the people who lived in this part of Michigan were used to this weather and a lot of them also drove big four wheel drive trucks that could pretty much go through anything. And just to add to my nervousness one of these was behind me and wondering why this little car was going so slow. These trucks sit a lot higher than most cars so that means their headlights are higher too. In fact they were just the perfect height to line up with my rearview mirrors and blind me that way. So if I turned my high beams on I would be blinded from in front of me and now if I didn’t go fast on snowy slippery roads I would be blinded by the truck behind me. We were going up and down hills so the truck didn’t have a chance to pass me and just sat there right on my back bumper. But just then there was an extra lane on our road just for this situation. I was able to move over and that truck and a few others behind him who also didn’t mind going fast in bad weather roared by and went off into the distance. After another hill or two the extra lane ended but by this time the crazy drivers had gone by me so it was much calmer and darker when I got back into the main driving lane. By now all you could really see on the road were a couple dark lines where the cars had been driving. The painted lines had disappeared beneath the snow. So I kept our car heading on those tracks and we got closer to my in-laws. Finally we went down one more big hill. and then I could see some lights up ahead. This was the beginning of the small town they lived in and I was very happy when I saw that the speed limit was dropping from 55mph to a more reasonable 35 and then a very comfortable 25 miles per hour. We turned onto a side road, went to a stop sign and then I turned onto the street my husband’s parents lived on. And I didn’t even stall at that sign! I was never so relieved to stop a car as I was when we pulled into their driveway and I turned the key to shut off the motor. I took the keys out, dropped them in my husband’s hand and told him I was FINISHED driving for this trip. On the way home I was staying in the passenger seat where I belonged!
