Stratford Festival—To see or not to see…
It was GREAT! Thanks for asking! Oh, wait, you didn’t ask! And why not? I told you all I was on vacation a couple weeks ago but no one asked how it was. Well to be fair, I was tweeting and posting the whole time but that’s no excuse! Oh well, it doesn’t really matter, I’m going to tell you all about it anyway. And don’t worry, I’m not going to set up the slideshow! So, as I said, our vacation was great. One of the better ones. You know, so good that you’re afraid to take the next one because you’re worried you used up all your good luck on this one! Really? You too? I mean it was a road trip but my favorite kind, I didn’t touch the steering wheel! If I was tired or bored, I took a nap while my chauffer/luggage porter/photographer/husband kept us going in the right direction. The hotels were good, the food was tasty, the weather was perfect and we saw some great stuff. One of the sort of unique things about living in Michigan is that it’s surrounded on 3 sides by water. If you drive in any direction except south you have to go on a bridge, ferry boat or in a tunnel to leave the state. And depending on where you are headed it may actually be a shorter drive to leave the country altogether! That’s how it was for us.
We started our trip by going downtown, through a tunnel under the Detroit River and into Ontario, Canada. I have lived near the border to Canada since I came to America over 8 years ago but never actually crossed over until last year. Since then we’ve gone several times but only to the city of Windsor just across the river. We’ve seen a couple concerts, eaten dinner and donated to the local Casino Charity! I like Canada. It’s a different country but it doesn’t feel different. You have to stop at the border and show your passport but maybe because you’re in your own car and can be there in under an hour from home, it just feels more comfortable. They have very strong ties with the UK still. The Queen is even on some of their money! And at least in the nearby areas of Ontario there are a lot of place names from the Olde Country. There’s a London, Windsor, Leamington and Stratford. That last one is the same name as the place some little known playwright was from. Shakestick. Rattlespeare. Shakespeare. Something like that. I don’t know, he was before my time. I think maybe my husband knew him!
Anyway every summer, this little town puts on all kinds of plays in the several theaters they have. We’d been hearing about the Stratford Festival for many years and decided we’d better stop and check it out. It was sort of on the way for our trip so we got tickets and saw the play “Taming of the Shrew” by that Billy or William Whatever. Not being a native English speaker I had a little trouble with some of the dialogue but probably got 75% of it. Like I said in my first line, it was GREAT! Very funny and well done. They even added some extra entertainment by having someone in the audience make a lot of trouble right in the beginning and being taken out by security. It was all part of the show and was particularly funny to me because the actor playing the member of the audience shouted out that he was a blogger and he would write a bad review! Well I’m a blogger and my review is two thumbs up! We decided we will definitely go back. So if you’re ever in that area and are looking for a nice little town to stop and spend some quality cultural time, you won’t be disappointed. And this was only our second day! We still had a LOT of vacation to go! Please come back to my blog and ride along!
Those photos were taken that day and the background is the little theater we went to.
