My birthday was last Friday. I turned 42. Yup, 42. Honestly, I am feeling good about my age for many reasons. First, I have to say I finally know who I am and am able to celebrate it. When I am not fighting with myself, the whole world is so much more peaceful. 😉 If I could go back in time to my early years, I probably would give the younger me some really valuable tips about fashion which I learned through the years. Below are some things I wish I had figured out before I turned 30. I am a firm believer of dress for success. Our appearance speaks louder than our voices. What is your dream life? What will you wear and what will you do after you’ve “made it”? By the way, you don’t have to wait until you reach your goal to dress like you’re already there. Do it now!! This mindset will help you reach your dream a lot quicker. Here are some must haves you should consider adding to your wardrobe; the sooner the better. Don’t worry, I’m going to cover things from head to toe! One key in all the suggestions is to go for quality over quantity. Always! That’s another expensive lesson that took far too long for me to teach myself!

When you invest in a pair of classy sunglasses, you can get by with fewer pairs of them. Go for a style that fits your face and they will make you look both glam and timeless. This is really one accessory you don’t want to shop for in your local gas station or dollar store. Those cheap lenses can distort your vision and can lead to not seeing something as clearly as you could. That is NOT a good feature when you’re behind the wheel of your car going 70 miles per hour!

I love my Chloe Fendy and Dior.

SPRING BREAK CANCUN TIPS---how we take the worry out of our vacation
SPRING BREAK CANCUN TIPS—how we take the worry out of our vacation

This is one of those seemingly simple things that has a much bigger impact than it’s cost. The right lip color can make a woman stand out and more memorable. There is no need to wear that killer hue every day; you don’t want it to become too routine. Be selective. That way, every time you do put it on, it will have that wow factor. It will not only brighten up your face but help really highlight that smile you’ll have once those compliments start rolling in. My current fave is the orange red from M.A.C.

You may not like to wear a full suit. OK, I’ll let you off the hook on that one, BUT, you must have a well made blazer featuring a great fitted cut. Every woman should have at least one blazer that is flattering to her silhouette. This piece can be worn to the office or as weekend wear. Feeling a little adventurous? This important piece can even accompany your evening dress to add a modern twist.

If you’ve ever seen Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s you know the look I’m referring to. This piece of outerwear can come in different lengths, colors, fabrics, weights and patterns. I have a couple (OK, maybe several) in my coat closet and they are always a go to option for a finishing touch. And, depending on the material, they can actually keep you dry when the monsoons come. Any time a part of my wardrobe puts itself between me and Mother Nature’s bad moods, I am a big fan of that piece. 😉

You don’t have to wear it for others, just do it for yourself. And here, remember that less is very often more. Maybe nobody can even notice that you’re wearing a fragrance but you will. Throughout your day, you will catch a light hint of the smell and if you’re like me, it always makes you smile. My personal favorites are below.

If you’ve been thinking about owning a great leather jacket, stop. And what I mean is stop thinking, just do it. You won’t regret it. This is one of the coolest and most used pieces you’ll own. When you want to look bad to the bone, nothing gets there quicker than leather. Equally at home paired with your favorite ripped skinny jeans as it is going out for a night on the town, this piece is always ready for anything. Honestly, you’ll wonder how you got by without it!

You should have at least one classy watch. A great watch can be a lifetime piece. That makes it one of those accessories that is well worth not buying some more trendy items in order to save up for it. My husband influenced me (Yeah, I know. I was surprised too!) about what brand watch to consider. His number one watch buying rule is to find a real watch maker, not a fashion designer. He also said it should come from a country famous for great chocolate, unlisted bank accounts and mountains. We both love and wear Movado watches.

Whether you are into flared, cropped, skinny, or bootcut, every woman needs a pair of jeans that makes their butt look good and feel good! My personal favorite brands are Joe’s and Paige. They offer some great fitting jeans for a petite frame like mine. If your budget allows, add some more colors. I consider blue, black and white (in that order) to be the most useful and versatile to start. There’s a whole rainbow available but just start with the basics and you won’t go wrong!

A signature bag is expensive but it will literally make every outfit look better. Not only better but will bring your whole wardrobe up a notch or two. Invest in something that will never go out of style and fits your personality. Don’t be afraid to pick your favorite color instead of black; mine is this red bag. But then what would you expect from someone who named their blog ColorAndGrace? We are pretty much inseparable, red and me; I have used it non-stop since I got it.

The key to your classic go to shoes is that they are well-designed, versatile and timeless. My personal favorites are below. When I was young, I probably did some damage to my feet with shoes that looked the part but were not really made for standing, much less walking. When I shop for shoes now, I wear them at the store for at least 20 or 30 minutes to make sure I can survive in them for at least part of the day.

The good news is, you don’t have to break the bank to buy these essentials. But really remember what I said, go for quality over quantity! You’ll be so happy you did. It’s so much better to save up for a few months to buy one piece that you will be happy to use for the next 5 or 10 years. I know you’ve heard it many times before but I’ve found it really is true that you get what you pay for. Thank you for reading and have a great day!

  1. Happy Birthday! I couldn’t agree more with having go-to lip color. I am still in my 20s and have yet to get a “good” pair of glasses that I love, but one day I will be brave enough to spend a bit more on a pair. Right now I am just so worried about losing or breaking them ha!

  2. First of all, happy belated birthday! Second of all, I am 31 and was happy to read that I have just about every fashionable piece on here that you talk about except the trench coat. I don’t know why but I just don’t gravitate towards buying them! One of those things that I love on others but not on me, ya know?!

    Happy weekend!
