How Petite Women Wear a Maxi Dress
You all know that I am a petite woman with only a 5 foot frame. But I still love to wear maxi dresses. Some of you have asked me to bring you some petite fashion advice, so this post has been written for you. 😉
When it comes to choosing the right maxi dress, there are a few things you need to pay closer attention to as a petite woman.
If you are petite many dresses probably start out too long for you. The ideal length for a maxi, for a petite woman, is somewhere between the ankle and the top of the foot. Any longer and you end up having to carry your dress all day. Any shorter and you look too boxy because it creates the illusion of even less height. For this Teal Blue Plunge Maxi Dress I got from the Lookbook Store, I had to cut off about 3 inches on the bottom.
Go with the flowy vibe and avoid a too tight fit. You want to find a material that is going to drape well. That means you should wear the dress, don’t let the dress wear you! Choose a soft jersey that will skim your body, move with you, and be super comfortable. Especially for a hot summer beach day, you will hate that you have a maxi dress on that doesn’t breathe and can’t move. A petite women should stay away from stiff materials. These fabrics can have a mind of their own and might decide on what your shape is instead of you! And that is dangerous scary!;)
Pay attention to the neckline! Strapless or spaghetti strap necklines can often create a boxy feel for a petite woman, thus making you look shorter. Instead opt for a deep v-neck which elongates your upper body and creates the illusion of height. A universally flattering halter style is always a good choice – plus, they tend to have adjustable ties, even better!
A maxi dress without a defined waistline for a petite woman, is an absolute disaster. You will look like you’re wearing a big potato sack, and not a fashionable one! So please choose a maxi dress with a tie that cinches at the waist – or throw on a narrow belt if needed! By accentuating your natural waist or high waist you are visually lengthening those legs.
5. Sleeve length
Petite women should avoid long sleeves on an already long dress. Your body should be visible in there somewhere. If not, you are drowning in your maxi dress. But a deep V neck and front slit like I am wearing, additional with rolling up my sleeves, gives a few breaks to the eyes so it doesn’t appear all covered up.
6. Solid or Print?
When choosing a maxi dress, solid colors are usually your best bet, because this will give you a long, continuous line from top to bottom so you will appear taller and thinner. If you love prints, then choose a small, consistent pattern.
Just say no to anything that is going to separate your body into sections with horizontal blocks of color or prints. They will cause the eye to want to look at each section separately and your body looks cut off into a few pieces.
I like this Teal Blue Plunge Maxi Dress at the lookbook Store very much but it needed a lot of alteration. My husband shortened it and I sewed the top and front slit. They both are too wide open for me so I had to close it up more and even used fabric tape to double secure the top. 😉 It is only $29 now but just keep it in mind, if you are a petite like me, prepare to cut and sew a lot to make it work for you.
Here are some cute maxi dressy under $100.
