There is a special personal connection between me and the Salvation Army. Back when I just moved to America, my late husband and I were pretty tight on money, so yard sales and the Salvation Army were the two major resources for us, especially after he was laid off not long after. Now you know why the Salvation Army has a very special place in my heart. 🙂
Are you a Salvation Army shopper? I am! Top fashion doesn’t have to mean top dollar — everyone wants the look for less! Last month, I went to the local Salvation Army store in Rochester Hills, Michigan and had so much fun treasure hunting!
Looking at the hottest color for this spring.
More spring colors.
Oh the timeless polka dot!
At this location, they even have a boutique section!
Everyday they have a certain color tag to indicate items that are on a discount. Every Friday they have this super great deal where you can spend $10 and get 10 pieces of clothing. 😉 Take a look at these two outfits I got from them. Can you guess how much I paid for each piece?
Zara Top with WHBM Pants:
Zara Top with WHBM Dress:
So, what is your guess for those 3 pieces? Well, here is the answer. The Zara top was $3.99, WHBM red pants were $5.99 and the dress was $18.99. How crazy! Many people don’t realize that in addition to unique vintage items, the stores are packed with new merchandise too — a lot of times the original tags are still on them! See below:
I have to tell you, the best one in Michigan has to be the one in Rochester Hills. With the high end communities surrounding it, I often find really good brands. One time I found a Prada top! Unfortunately it was way too big so I didn’t buy it. One time there was an Armani Lace vest. The trip I just took last month was when I found this Missoni dress. Again, it was just too big on me.
Ok, enough about fashion, let’s talk about a serious topic. 😉 The ARC (The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center) operates 37 thrift stores across southeast Michigan, including the one I go to, from which all proceeds benefit the ARC’s 180-day residential adult rehabilitation center for men and women struggling with substance abuse. I know a few people in my life that have suffered from this.
Without the support of a comprehensive rehabilitation program there is a lesser chance of recovery and a greater risk of relapse. That’s where The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) can help.
Full recovery from substance abuse goes beyond traditional detox treatment. You need individualized emotional, social and spiritual assistance to maintain a strong and healthy path on the road to recovery – and all of that takes time. At the ARC, they give you the time you need to self-reflect, work on self-defeating habits and behaviors and truly heal so relapse can be avoided. They can help you rebuild your life through a residential, self-help program that can run 180 to 365 days, depending on your personal progress. Their 12-step, abstinence-based approach is designed to help you learn how to stay clean.
Sobriety is a lifelong commitment! As you can see, the ARC is a significant stop on the road to recovery! Through other Salvation Army programs, as well as partnerships with a variety of housing, job placement, relapse prevention and other community organizations, they can help ensure your successful return to independent living.
So you see, shopping at ARC stores is not just getting amazing fashion for less, but also contributes to a great cause helping others return to a healthy and clean life. Now I am teaming up with the ARC to give one lucky winner a $50 gift card to shop at any of their 37 stores in Southeast Michigan. All you need to do is leave a comment below. 🙂

I always make donations to the Salvation Army through myself and my resale business Pure Essence Resale Boutique. I shop there quite often because I have gotten spoiled not shopping retail prices.
Loved the article and the outfits!

I always donate things to the Salvation Army. Once in a while I buy things from them too. How many hours do you usually search through clothes to find something you want to buy?

I support the Salvation Army for years here in the Netherlands! I think it is incredible what they do for the homeless.
At this moment I am online thrift shopping for the first time. I never bought something pre worn, but slowly I am getting used to the idea. It is actually because I can t find anything nice in the main shops without paying huge somes of money! Wish me luck!
