Key West, Florida is probably on everyone’s list of 100 places to visit before you die. lol! What to wear when traveling to key west in January? How to travel light in the winter season to a warm place without packing too much or too little? Read on to find out what I have packed for my 7 day trip recently to Key West, Florida!
One of my life goals is to travel every 45 days. I work very hard in one and a half month then relax hard too for a few days after. We need the balance to keep going, right? After this past busy holiday seasons, in middle of January, I finally treated myself to Key West with beautiful island view and yummy food from all around the world. I was spoiled to wake up to this view every morning while in Michigan where I live people woke up with the snow storm and 11 minus degrees.
Day 1: Travel Look:
The day I headed to the Detroit Airport, it was about 30 degrees in Michigan and in the upper 70s in Key West. Obviously layering is the best choice to be able to handle two different seasons without changing to a different outfit. Since I have traveled so much, I realized the most difficult outfit to put together is the one I am wearing when I come from a cold place to a warm place. I dislike cold, so a coat or jacket is must have. But I also dislike that outerwear takes up so much space if I need to take it off or put it away. So a light-weight cashmere coat becomes the best choice. Since the coat is quite bold, I kept everything else with very timeless black and white combination. Super comfy leggings, stylish sneaker, and light-weight cashmere sweater.
Day 2: Walking Around
I came in quite late the first day. After a nice lobster dinner near my hotel, I went to bed with the excitement of seeing what this place looks like under the sunlight. Then the next morning came, it was quite cloudy. The temperature was between 50s to 60s. Where are the blue skies that I came for? Where are the rays of sunshine that I have been longing for a long time? Lol, oh well, I was still quite happy the warmer weather compared to my home state, Michigan.
I spent the whole day just walking around this little island. The first thing that I have noticed, had to be those gypsy chickens! I didn’t do any study or research before this trip since I was so busy. So I was surprised to see many chickens just rolling around on the street and in the restaurants. It was a quite refreshing view. Lol!
Since Key West is an island, most of the clothes I have packed are the island gear with my personal twist. Sorry, no Hawaii shirt for me! 😉 Shorts are definitely a must have for a place like Key West!
I like to travel light so I like to use a piece to go with several different looks. You are going to see this pair of shorts again later along with this flowy duster and those pair of nude booties!
Day 3: Neighborhood walk and Sunset
I have a thing about houses. Wherever I visit, I love to just stroll around the neighborhood to see the rally local people’s life. I have to say, no matter what look the houses are, they are always beautiful in my eyes because of those palm trees. Lol!
The neighborhood I visited, all the houses are so clean, well maintained and with tasteful decorations. I can see myself living there during those harsh winter season in Michigan. What a great getaway place!
The temperature was still between 50s to 60s. But at least there was sunshine! A pair of white shorts always a safe choice for a beach vacation. The playful denim jacket is my all-time vacation favorites. It serious can go with everything. You can see it again with a different look later. By the way, the stripes are the pattern always reminds me of a beach vacation. This pair of heeled slippers can go casual, also can dress up.
The evening was quite chilly but the sunset was really beautiful!
Day 4: Another Lazy Day
The temperature was slowly raising up to low 70s. But it was too cold for pool or beach, so I chose to have another lazy day. First, coffee please!
Before the blue skies disappeared, quickly snapped a few photos on my balcony.
It was still quite cold with the winds, but I decided to get some poolside time. Went there read books next to the pool for a couple of hours. And then walk around again that evening! I ate a lot of sea food during this trip! By the way, I had oysters 7 days in a row during this vacation.Lol!
The evenings were quite chilly in Key West, especial near water. I used the same pair of nude booties and my favorite denim jacket to go with this black bohemian style vacation dress. By the way, looking for vacation dresses? I realized Free People has many cute ones since this brand is famous with resort wear.
Day 5: Pool Day Finally
The temperature was finally at the upper 70s and I have been keeping an eye on the weather forecast for that whole week. Today was the only day seems not too cold to jump into the pool and lay on the chase. But wait! I need some photos and brunch first!
For me, a vacation chic look has to be polka dots, stripes and fedora hat.Lol!
Now it is pool time! Almost!
I love a timeless one piece with some flowy beach covers. Of course, I had to add some colors to spice them up, right?
Don’t worry, I took those earrings off when I was swimming! 😉
Day 6: Beach Day
The temperature was still quite warm, so I went to brunch again before I headed to the beach. Key West has quite a bit French-influenced restaurants. For a foodie like me, I had to try new restaurants every single day! I have to say, all of them are so good!
My daily walk after a big brunch under the sun! When Michigan is below zero, I was so happy that I could wear a sundress in January. 😉
As you have noticed, I do love polka dots for vacation! And a white fedora hat. Of course don’t forget my all-time vacation favorite white sunglasses. Here are my nude booties again! A pair of comfy heeled nude booties can be dressed up or down, they are seriously a must have for everyone’s wardrobe.
Yay! Finally beach time!
You may recognize those black denim shorts and the duster from Day one’s look. I packed a few other flowy beach covers but that evening was getting quite chilly so I had to change the plan. I wore my black one-piece swimsuit on the top but I didn’t go in the water. It was just too cold to do so. But I walked in the water so that counts too! Lol!
The sunset at the beach was breathtaking too!
Day 7: Last Walk Before Saying Good-bye
Didn’t want to leave at all. Michigan was minus 16 that morning! I went to have some breakfast and walked around town before heading to the airport. Here you go again! The black denim shorts, the nude heeled booties, the white sunglasses with another Free People top!
Overall, there are two more dresses, two more beach covers and swimsuits I didn’t use due to the cooler weather unexpectedly. I totally brought 3 bags with me on this trip. The LOVE bag is always for when I travel since it is big enough to put all the travel essentials. I also brought the YSL bag since it can be used as a cross body bag for the day and a clutch for the night. The last one was a straw bag just for the beach vacation theme.
