Sometimes I get the feeling that I was born in the wrong era. I watch old movies showing those pencil skirts, frilly cuffs and collars, high heels and cool stockings and think to myself, “I could wear that!” I’ve recently gotten a retro pillbox hat with mesh veil and my own pencil skirts. The clean cool lines of these fashions never go out of style. I prefer modern movies for entertainment but for glamour and sophistication you can’t do better than old time Hollywood. Both of my husband’s sisters live in the Los Angeles area and we went out for a visit a few years ago. I think Hollywood Boulevard is probably a bit different than in the good old days. Human statues and people dressed as all sorts of movie characters were all competing to try to get my money. It all made Disney’s Fantasyland the next day seem realistic by comparison!
Of course when your blog is named ColorAndGrace you can’t get by with black and white so sometimes I like to add my own touch of color to a feeling of old time Hollywood glam. Today’s outfit starts with a long and soft dusty pink lace skirt. This is a very useful piece as it not only looks good during the hot summer months but also works well in cold weather when layered over something a bit more seasonal. Lace has the ability to look very feminine and classic while also adding some nice texture and dimension to your outfit. The fact that it’s open for you to see through makes it able to pair with all sorts of interesting inner layer pieces. The pleating on this skirt adds even more depth and form while the floral pattern in the lace is as soft as the color.
I stayed in the same color palette when I paired the skirt with a pink and grey horizontal striped wool sweater to keep me warm and cozy. The sweater features quarter length sleeves so I made up the difference with my long two tone black and grey leather gloves. Pink and grey get along together very well so the gloves were a natural for both function and fashion. My skirt features a wide brown band at the waist to flatter my form as it acts as the perfect border next to the colors and stripes of the sweater. The brown of the integrated belt and on the sweater gave me inspiration for my choice of coat and I pounced on my faux fur leopard pattern piece for that perfect touch of glamour. Never one to miss a chance at a pop of color I finished up with my bright red leather bag(You also can see different looks here, ) with shiny metal trim and a kiss of bright red lipstick. Of course you can’t be seen in Hollywood without your celebrity sunnies so I went with my clean white oversized pair. All in all it’s a look that’s ready anytime and anywhere!

I will never understand how it is that a short workweek always feels longer than a normal one! I had Monday off for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday but it seemed like the four remaining days got together to make sure they would provide a full week’s worth of agro! But I made it! And to reward myself for going above and beyond the call of duty I’m going shopping! Now that I’m doing this fashion blog it means that shopping is actually sort of work related! Thank goodness it’s also something that I love to do. If this ever becomes my fulltime job I think it will be hard to wipe the smile off my face. I mean, can you imagine going to a mall, sorting through the latest fashion finds, mixing and matching different looks on the fly and in the dressing room, all because you’re supposed to? I might get tired of it but probably not in this lifetime!
It’s Saturday, which for me usually means jeans. I’ve planned to create a fun and useful shopping look for a long time but haven’t had the chance until now. I’ve been a bit surprised how much of my after work time is taken up with my blog. My husband has been a big help but I’ve been creative director, computer programmer, editor, website developer, lead stylist, producer, and sometimes cook! I’ve said it before, fashion is very serious business! So when I go shopping I don’t want anything to get in my way, and that includes myself! Even in winter I don’t want to be slowed down with a big and bulky coat. If I’ve managed to talk my husband into accompanying, I usually suggest that he drop me off at the entrance to the store and then, park the car. If he’s not with me I’ll park as close as I can and then do my best dash to the door! A few seconds of chill are worth not being bogged down with my winter coat. Another of my shopping day tricks is to pick some fashionable and fitted clothes. I choose some of my better outfits so I can really make sure that what I’m looking at is a step in the right direction. There’s no sense wasting time and more importantly, hard earned money if I’m already wearing something better than what’s on sale. I’ve mentioned earlier that I started with jeans and the reason is obvious. There are few pieces of clothing more comfortable and timeless than your favorite skinny jeans. Mine feature a high waist to keep my figure where it belongs!
I know I’m going to be spending some time in a changing room or maybe five so want to be sure that what I wear is easy to get out of when I need to do a little off with the old and on with the new. Keeping me warm during my journey from car to cashier is my soft and easy to operate black cashmere sweater. I knew I’d be putting on some miles so made sure I chose a pair of boots that were extra comfy and made for walking. Another feature to help with a quick and easy off and on is to make sure the boots have a full length zipper. Most fitting rooms don’t have the space needed for some of the yoga positions I have to use to get my tall zipper-less boots off! All these pieces should be the basics any closet has. But just being convenient to shop in isn’t good enough if it’s not interesting and fashionable. So that’s where some extra pieces come in. I covered the cashmere with a light flowy kimono. This piece added instant style and color along with some fun texture with the frilly hem detail. I needed something to carry my credit cards in so grabbed my colorful and useful large blue bag. When I go shopping I always choose a bag with a cross body strap. This keeps my hands free to grab the tags and handle those hangers! Time is at a premium when you’re shopping till you drop, so to make sure I’m not wasting any by having to untangle myself from the clothes I’m trying on, I minimize my jewelry. I stay away from earrings, necklaces and bracelets that tend to catch on clothes and can even damage them in the frenzy. I finished off my look with a cool wool hat featuring a bright blue colorful band that really tops off this outfit. OK, on your mark, get set, SHOP!
