Michigan Bespoke Luxury Leather Goods Beau Satchelle Interview #2
I have received an overwhelming number of comments about my new favorite yellow bag from native Michigan luxury company Beau Satchelle. Yes, there is no doubt that we have become pretty much inseperable and you are going to see it more in the future. 🙂
If you are new to Color and Grace, you can read Michigan Bespoke Luxury Leather Goods Beau Satchelle Interview #1 to catch up with this amazing brand. And today, our interview with T. Michael, Luxury Designer/Leather Artisan at Beau Satchelle LLC continues.
8. How did you learn your craft? Are you self taught or did you study somewhere? How long did it take to become an experienced hand crafted luxury leather designer?
Yes, I was self taught. Learning the art of leather craft is a serious challenge, there was no mentor present, I didn’t study at a University or Trade School and everything I studied was absorbed through hours and months on the internet; ‘YouTube University’ was my main source. Of course practice was also a big factor but buying equipment when you are uncertain if you will stick to this craft or go back to the life of working in the corporate world was a concern at the time. Over the last 5 years, I’ve managed to become a luxury leather artisan in my own right. I look at my competitors and feel that it was well worth the time, practice and patience it takes to master this craft.
It remains to be a growth and development process as learning and working with different textures of leather and exotic skins make for a new challenge each day. However, I like to say that my life’s experiences in building things as a youth and my career path in engineering and architectural design helped me excel in this craft and continue to evolve the Beau Satchelle brand.
9. How has your work evolved since you began your own label?
By leaps and bounds! We attribute this to study, practice and study some more. What more can an amateur wanting to become a professional do other than evaluate his or her performance for this evolution to take place; making the proper adjustments and applying them to the overall routine. What works and what doesn’t? These are the questions we continue to ask and execute when necessary; always modifying our performance as our evolution continues.
The difference is practice and repetition. Practice perfection and repeat for a better product and a better you. I feel that whatever you do in life it ‘must’ be a level of wanting to make it better or do better. Being content will only keep you in the same place you were yesterday.
Our values are based on some of the same principals as a world renowned PHD or a top professional athlete or an exclusive luxury brand. Having the best of the best is the ultimate goal and once you get there, everyone is at your heels to take the #1 spot. This requires you to re-tool. Even after you’ve found your niche, there is always more work to do.
10. What are your inspirations to design your handbags?
My inspiration comes from the perfect imperfections of nature…God’s work, beautiful landscapes, scenic oceansides and the simple forms of life like a raindrop. Simple Is The Most Beautiful! This form of the creation process is what generates my motivation to build beautiful things.
As for artists, we admire and are inspired by true perfectionists; the painter, the bespoke tailor, the architect, the culinary chef, the sculptor, the design engineer, the shoemaker, etc. Their talents and commitment to their craft is highly respected.
But most of all, we are moved by a client’s love for our bespoke craftsmanship; their experience when becoming an owner of a Beau Satchelle luxury good is the ultimate inspiration.
11. What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your work?
We are really fascinated by Detroit’s expansion and rapid growth in the downtown area and around the community. It naturally feeds into our work as we seem to be the only bespoke leather goods brand in the area and we strive to provide the highest quality possible to represent our best for the good people here in the Metro Detroit area.
12. What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your company/Label?
Already acknowledged from life experiences but being an entrepreneur holds truer than ever. Time Waits For No One!
13. What one piece of advice would you give to young designers?
Once a decision has been made to pursue your dreams… gain the knowledge, training and build confidence. All the while, stay focused on your objective because many challenges and people have confusing ways in attempting to sway your decision from those dreams. Stay Clear Of The Suspect!
14. What would you like to achieve before the end of the year?
Complete a full collection of luxury goods that showcase the Beau Satchelle brand name and are sought after by the world. At that time, our e-commerce site will open with quenched anticipation.
15. What do you like to do outside of work?
My love for outdoor activities include running or bike riding which help open my mind and assists with realizing my vision. Exercise is very important along with healthy eating habits.
I am rather versatile when it comes to extra curricular activities; family outings, concert halls, museums, boating and travel just to name a few.
16. What’s your personal motto?
Find your purpose in life and pursue it to the fullest as it gives personal clarity when defining your true being.
The concept of craftsmanship fascinates and drives me. For me, craftsmanship is doing what you love and doing it right. Just like T. with Beau Satchelle and me with my blog. No matter what you do, craftsmanship is not a destination, it’s a life-long discipline. It’s the quality of the work. It’s a passion for betterment. And someday, that quality of craftsmanship will create a piece of art of your own, which people will love and measure forever.
