How to style a classic little black dress for Valentine’s Day

Time to take in the carbage!

I’m usually pretty healthy. I get my flu shot every year and for the most part have gotten through cold season without any problems. Unfortunately I’ve been a bit under the weather this week. I’m not sure if it’s something I ate, some sort of flu not covered by my shot or some other stomach ailment but I’ve had a bum tummy for a couple days now. It got bad enough that I went to see my doctor yesterday. I really like my doctor but she can be a bit too attentive. She can spend an hour with everyone telling stories and showing pictures of body parts I’d be perfectly happy with not knowing how they look. So while it’s great that you never feel rushed it also means that you’re usually in for a good 3 hours at the office! I got a couple prescriptions and hopefully am getting over it but one thing she suggested is to eat a bland diet made up of the kinds of carb filled foods I’ve been trying to stay away from the last couple years! We had to stop at the local Seven-11 on the way home for a loaf of no fiber, no whole grain, no seeds, nuts, health or texture plain white bread. I had a couple slices this morning toasted with butter. It was WONDERFUL! I mean I know it’s like the worst thing you can put into your body but after having gone without for a long time it’s quite a treat. Once I get back on track I’ll dump the bland for more nutritional fare but I plan to enjoy the short vacation to Club Carb. After all, Doctor’s orders!

Moving along in my countdown to Valentine’s Day I’m continuing with outfits that are just right for a romantic night out with your Significant Other. There is probably nothing more essential in EVERY woman’s wardrobe for an emergency dinner date than the Little Black Dress. Having one or more at the ready is as important as having candles and matches during a blackout. This time of year in Michigan really calls for keeping warm while you’re looking your best. I’ve featured sweater dresses several times over the last few weeks and see no reason to stop now! These pieces are really multifunctional. They keep you warm while they show off your figure. My dress has a flared frilly hem that gives it a bit of a bell shape at the bottom of the hourglass. The sleeves are also flared and ruffled to give interesting texture and depth. Black tights and leather heels keep the look crisp and clean from top to bottom. Long drapy pearl and chain necklaces are a classic choice to compliment the pitch perfect pitch black of the dress. For my next layer a tough and chic short black leather biker jacket with lots of metal accents is a natural that keeps the night alive all day long. The zippers and rivets are a cool and blingy accent to the necklace and give that don’t mess with me vibe. For more looks with this biker jacket please see here. When the temperatures drop, I heat up with my faux fur leopard pattern coat. The black spots on the jacket are an easy tie in with the black base and the tans and yellows add welcome splashes of color. For more looks with this coat please see here. And speaking of that ever important pop I’ve grabbed my bright yellow leather studded clutch purse for that must have neon flash. My oversize sunnies look fabulous during the day while the rest of my outfit does the same after the moon and stars take over!

What to wear on Valentine’s Day—A poncho dress

Looking grand at the Grand!

I’ve mentioned before that my husband and I have started to check items off our Travel Bucket List. Last April we flew to Las Vegas and while we were sort of in the neighborhood, took a drive to see the Grand Canyon. I hadn’t been anywhere that had so much open land before. I was amazed how empty and brown everything was. As you probably know, I’m a big fan of color and don’t know if I’d like to live in a place with so few green growing things to look at. I imagine that it may be a bit different in other seasons but I prefer the trees and flowers of Michigan in springtime. I’m afraid that sometimes I don’t share my husband’s excitement at seeing nature. I mean the Canyon was Grand and all but just think how much better it could be if they put a designer label outlet mall on the edge. I’ve even got some ideas for store names. There could be a tailor shop called The Big Ditch Stitch! Or a shoe store called Mule Trip Mules. They could even feature a line of Canyon Clothing! There could be South Rim Slacks, North Rim Necklaces and Colorado River Cutoffs! I mean even nature could do with a makeover sometimes!

Today I’m continuing with my Valentine’s Day suggestions. I decided to go with a bit different look by featuring my poncho style knit dress. It features a southwest geometric design with a color palette of tan, brown and orange. The large squared off sleeves give it interesting texture and depth while the earthy colors remind me of Native American designs. I didn’t want to take any attention away from the cool dress so went with black tights and black leather booties. They play off the dark highlights on the dress without grabbing the spotlight. For a blast of contrast I went with my rich blue velvet purse. The cross body length chain strap adds sparkle while it fits right in with the rest of the colors. My small flowery black and white necklace plays well with the purse and adds another touch of bling.

When it’s time to head out for that romantic dinner I stayed warm and toasty when I grabbed my rich wine colored wool coat and purple faux fur collar. The purple fur is a fun piece that combines function and fashion. I have these in several colors and they never disappoint. Keeping the sun out of my eyes is the job of my big white sunnies and they came through in style. I just needed a couple more finishing touches and I also couldn’t let that orange on the dress go to waste! So I helped to bring it front and center with a kiss of bright orange lipstick. My colorful bracelets and gold, silver and black wristwatch teamed up to make sure I made it to my dinner reservation fashionably but not fashionably late!
