If you’ve been reading my blog for any time at all you may know that when I first moved to America from China I lived in a pretty small town about an hour’s drive outside of Detroit, Michigan. Small town life, like many things has its share of good and bad. On the bad side is the lack of great shopping, a large selection of restaurants and my husband’s long commute. On the plus side is a more relaxed and friendly vibe. People stop and say hello and when they ask how you are it seems that they really care about the answer. We don’t live in that town any more but we still visit fairly often. Our town actually does a pretty good job with providing things to do and see throughout the year. One event that has been happening every year for as long as I’ve been in this country is what they call the Pink Party. As you might guess it’s an event that raises money to support the local hospital and their efforts in supportive care and breast cancer research. This is a pretty serious topic but this community addresses it with lots of laughs and tons of fun.
They fill up the entire downtown area with displays, demonstrations, music, dancing, food and drink and pink, pink, pink! Everywhere you look people are dressed in pink from their hats to their shoes. Even pets get into the spirit and it’s not at all unusual to see a dog with pink dyed fur or pink polish on their nails. Pink ribbons, pink cars and pink flowers are everywhere. This year’s party was Thursday, June 11 and after my husband finished work for the day we made the drive back to our old neighborhood to participate and celebrate. He’s a big supporter and has no male hang-ups at all about putting on a bright pink shirt. He even wore it to his office all day to get in the mood. He likes to use a line he heard on a popular sit-com when he says not only does he like pink but “pink loves me!” Being a work day the party is always an evening affair. It started at 5PM and went to 10PM. We walked through the town watching and listening to all the sights and sounds. There was a DJ playing music while belly dancers demonstrated their art. I’d love to learn that but I don’t think my hips have EVER moved like that!
We listened to a vocal a Capella group, a saxophone quintet and a pop trio among others. We ate dinner at a local restaurant and had never seen it so packed! One super fun thing they do is have local men volunteer to be escorts for groups of 8 or more women who go in together as a group. These guys wear pink tuxedos as they follow around their assigned group and carry all their bags and generally take care of them. Everyone really gets in the mood of the event and they raise a lot of money for a great cause. If that’s not a win-win I don’t know what is! When we were walking around I actually started to miss our little town and the cool things they do. That is at least until we got in the car and drove the hour back to our home. That reminded me how much I don’t miss that drive on a regular basis! Anyway, it did give me a great excuse to wear my pink blouse. And made me realize that I don’t have nearly enough pink in my wardrobe! Luckily, I know exactly how to treat that problem! Gotta go!
