As you probably know, I am not from America. I was born and raised in China and only moved here about 9 years ago. Since living here there is one fact that I am absolutely sure of. And that is whoever invented English hated anyone who has to learn it as an adult! I mean you can’t even explain a sentence like “The bass guitar player likes to go bass fishing.” Really? The exact same word with the same 4 letters is pronounced differently and has completely unrelated meanings? Another? Ok, “How much is the bus fare to take me to the county fair?” Or how about “Two pieces of cake is just too much to eat.” Here we have 3 words that sound exactly the same but they are spelled different and each mean something else. Not bad enough? “Their friends said they’re going to wait for them over there.” Aaaarrggghhhh! And people think Chinese is hard! And don’t even get me going about slang. Recently in my school’s lunch room I heard a student tell his friend “Dude, don’t scarf down that food so fast, you’ll choke!” Wait. Scarf? Scarf is a verb? Now even I know better than that. I have several scarves and not even one of them is a verb!

And I’m always hearing old sayings that don’t really mean much to me. And I guess to a lot of people nowadays. “Let sleeping dogs lie.” I mean, what else would you do with them? And I’ll bet you heard this saying a million times before: “The devil is in the details”. Well maybe that one’s a bit different. I believe you’ve heard it so often only because it’s true! I am a firm believer in this. What about you? To me, accessories are the details that can make or break an outfit. What are your favorite accessories to use when you feel your outfit just needs a little extra to spice it up and add that finishing touch?

I love to use colorful handbags, posh scarves and maybe a fun bowtie.

C’est Mode Chic just happens to have all those universal accessories that an elegant lady wants to turn to when she’s in the mood to add a little bit of fun. Do you like the scarf I got from them? I mean, couldn’t you just scarf it up? See what I mean? It just sounds silly! Anyway, I wore this outfit the first day of my vacation last week in Cancun, Mexico. It was only 64 degrees that day! That may not sound cold but it is for that part of the world. Especially since I packed for the mid 80’s. Fortunately I took this scarf during my last minute packing for our trip. And it sure saved the day, or I should say that first night. Not only does it look great, but it also kept me warm. Now that’s the kind of multitasking I can really appreciate.

I got this Geometric Leopard Print Scarf because I am a big fan of the animal prints in general and leopard offers such chic colors. It just screams to me of Audrey Hepburn’s style, so elegant and chic. Such a subtle color is so easy to use with just about anything.

  1. I understand you, Grace. English is a very illogical language, and can be difficult for those of us who don’t speak an Indo-European language as a native language. My native language is Finnish (very different from English), and I have been studying English since I was 9, and I still learn something new all the time. And I teach English as a foreign language! But, as a language teacher, let me tell you that it’s also a matter of perspective, in a way. The more you learn the more you realise you still have a lot more to learn, and it never ends. You’re never ‘done’ so to speak, and that’s just something you have to accept as a language student. But, and this is my professional opinion as a teacher, it is also really important to be proud of how far you’ve come and how much you’ve learned.

  2. Krystal Powell and Audrey Kasdorf

Throughout grade school, my teachers had always remarked how difficult the English language was. I understood this years later in studying a variety of languages. Our language is awfully confusing! Pulling bits from other languages and cultures into ours, making slang words actual words in our dictionary. Just torture!
On the contrary, the scarf you’re wearing is adorable and who wouldn’t love the bright handbags? Must haves!

  3. OH my gosh you are hilarious! Yes English is very hard to learn with the same words having totally different meanings depending on the context of the sentence. Love that outfit, and that last picture …looks like you’re sort of waving good bye to us, like hey I’m in Mexico and you’re not…hehe 🙂

  4. Ada

You are so funny about your thoughts on English. There are too many exceptions to each rule lol.

Love that scarf and how you tied it. Also the oversided floppy hat totally suits you. This is like a fun Riviera look. C’est chic has some awesome bags.

This week’s current, brand-new linkup is live (a day early). I would love for you to join it. Thank you. Ada. =)

  5. Loving this chic on the marina or resort look. The English lesson is definitely a hard one. Trying to explain the same spelling word with different sounds and meanings to my Nevaeh (age 7) has been a task. You seem to be mastering and learning good though, great post.
