Book Report – ‘Capture Your Style’ by Aimee Song, Part 2

In today’s book report, I will focus on more basics and the next post will include some of the photography tricks I learned, so you have to come back to read more later. 😉
1. Using Geotags:
First I hope we are all on the same page. Instagram is not just a place to show off how rich you are. It is a community to inspire and connect with each other. A geotag is simply the location where an image is taken. You can use this feature to let others know all the cool places you have been. Geotags can also help you discover a lot of new places when you are traveling. The best part? You may make some new friends on Instagram because you all have been to the same place.
2. Showcase who you are in 12 photos
Your latest 9-12 photos are always the first ones that others can see under your account. This first impression will decide if they will go through more photos, or even visit your website. Or they may cause them to just leave and forget who you are 5 minutes later.
Ideally, you need to plan ahead and always think about how your most recent 12 photos will layout. The goal of your 12 photos is to tell any visitor a compelling, cohesive story about you. Honestly, I am pretty bad at this planning. I use Instagram mainly to promote my blog post. So you see 3 or 4 photos about the same outfits in 2 days when my blog post is live. 😉
Instagram is kinda like a vision board for a lot of people, so use your most beautiful images. In this book, Aimee suggested using Lo-Fi, X-ProII and Valencia for your filters. The best outcomes happen when you keep just one kind of filter all the time to create a seamless gallery. I rarely use any filters, but I plan to try some more later.
3. Treat your Instagram account like a business.
If you are dreaming about being invited to work with so many big brands like Aimee Song, then first you need to be serious about how you build your Instagram account. Your first step should be a mission statement.
Yes, you are reading that right. It doesn’t matter what, it always comes down to the bottom line, “who you are, what do you want and what you can offer?” Aimee’s mission statement is “Inspire and connect with people all around the world through photography, beauty, and passions, whether that’s food, lifestyle, fashion, etc.” It doesn’t have to be long, just one sentence is fine and you don’t have to post it. It’s just for you to keep yourself focused. Mine is “Spread a positive vibe and be the best of yourself”. What is yours?
