Passion for Fashion the Unconventional Challenge Fashion Show
I have known Mary Rettenmaier for 10 years and she is working non-stop at promoting art and helping others. First, she started the Runway re-purposed fashion competition, which has become a big fashion event every year. You can read my post Runway re-purposed 2016 fashion show to learn more and read an interview with Mary Behind the scenes of Runway Repurposed fashion show. Now, she is working on this new gig to encourage others to create something new, from trash to triumph.
I was so excited to be one of the judges for this cool out-of-the-box creation and competition. All designers were asked to create an outfit by using trash!!! Maybe not real trash, but they had to use recycled items and non-traditional components. For example, you can use paper, metal, plastic, duct tape—the sky is the limit! 😉
Since it is the first year of this new competition, I was not sure how many people would be participating, but I was surprised to see a total of 28 designers who were split into two groups of students and adults.
Below are some very creative looks from the group of student designers. Test yourself and see if you can identify what material they used to create the outfit. Can you guess who is the winner? 😉
Most of the models are designers as well. I was blown away by their talents and dedication. The balloom girl is the winner in this group. Hope you got it right. 😉
Below are some of the looks from the adult designers.
Can you tell what materials were used for these outfits? I bet you may have a difficult time to identify all of them. The winner was the last look, which was mostly made of shower curtains and duct tape.
Once again, I am very proud of how talented the people in Michigan are and I hope you enjoyed this post!

Shelbee on the Edge
I love these fun design challenges! A friend of mine just interviewed Tim Gunn about the upcoming season of Project Runway and he was talking about the trash/upcycled challenge that will be on this season. I can’t wait to see what they come up with. How fun that you got to be judge of this fabulous event!

What a fantastic idea! I’ve been wanting to make jewellery out of recycling rubbish such as bottle tops and those ribbon loops that everyone cuts out of clothes but I haven’t got around to it yet. I often refashion jewellery bought from charity shops into something new.

So much creativity – I think the playing card skirt is my favorite. And most importantly, everyone looks like they’re having so much fun. What a great experience!
