Everybody knows we need to focus on what we want. But the reality is we often focus on what we DON’T want.

Last week, I was invited to an event in a nearby city in Michigan. The night before my trip when I chatted with a friend, I said something like this ” Let’s see how long it will take me to get there since I always get lost.” My friend pointed out to me “Be positive!” I suddenly realized that my energy focused on what exactly I don’t want!!

Why am I doing this?! It kept me thinking. Later on, I think I found my answer. The fears of driving the long distance and in the none familiar area got me worried. Then I realized that over the years, I had built a habit, or my mind is on the auto pallet because this belief “If I worry, I’ll never have a bad surprise.” But the truth is, when I am always concerned, and on edge, my nervous system is on high alert. Mental tension translates into physical tension, that is why I often notice my sore neck and super tight shoulders. Those physical stress which can make us feel like we really should worry because we’re feeling so physically agitated. What a strange cycle!

After I cleared my mind and intentionally focused on what I want, which was to have a smooth road trip, everything turned out perfectly fine! I used my car GPS and also set my phone GPS just in case any surprise constructions on the way. Then I popped in the motivation CD and listened to all the way there. šŸ˜‰

The event was very successful. You can read here. I had a great time, and when I got back to my hotel room, I was exhausted. Before bed, I checked the weather, and I was worried again. Winter Weather Advisory!! It says 3 inches snow the next day. My little car doesn’t do well on the snowy roads, and my snow tire appointment was the week after. When I was laying in the dark, I saw myself ended up in the ditch and standing in the cold. I felt my breathing got heavier and heartbeat is going faster. I suddenly realized that I did it again!! I put all the scary images into my own head and made my body suffer just by imaging. So I asked myself “What do I want now?” The answer is very clear, and that is I want to be able to sleep at this moment. So it was the first time that I decided to think about later when it is really happening.

The next morning, the first thing I did after I was up, was opening the curtain to check. Oh well, the weather forecast was correct! Lol! Texted my step-daughter and it was snowing at home as well. I focused on what I want, which a safe and smooth trip home. So I switched around my calendar and waited a few extra hours when the snow was slowing down and then headed home. It turned out the freeway was not bad at all. In fact, the trees and fields were so beautiful with snow covered.

When I truly focus on what I want, my life is getting clearer, easier and I feel less worried. Have you ever caught yourself focusing on what you DON’T want? Share with us below please!

  1. SO true ! This is a lovely post with a good reminder – focus on what you WANT, not what you don’t. I can relate to the exact scenario – living in Canada I have lied in bed worried about winter roads the next day and lost sleep! Staying focused on not letting worry take over is hard, but this is a great gentle reminder.

  3. My mum worries about thing that often don’t happen, or if they do they’re not a big deal. I learned this pattern of behaviour from her but managed to break it – getting her to think differently is another matter though! I took her holiday recently and she fretted over everything, it was challenging for me not to feel stressed but I’d pre-emptied it and prepared myself. Whenever I feel anxious about something I ask myself what’s the worst that could happen, what steps can I take to prevent it, and if it does happen how will I deal with it. That helps me to feel calm and in control. BTW, I love your sheer maxi skirt, the hearts are so pretty!
